    When using Nero does the avi need to be converted to mpg or does Nero automatically do that when burning the avi?

    you need to encode the avi file with an encoder like tmpgenc in order for it to be vcd or svcd.

    Nero is just a cd writer not an encoder.

    Actually, if you go to the help menu in Nero 5.5.2.4, you'll find that there is a way to burn AVIs onto a VCD as MPEG. Apparently, it takes a while although I don't know how long. I've never tried it. I guess Nero included a rudimentary encoder in this version.
    Also, if the MPEG is non-compliant, it will give you the option to re-encode.
