    Followed the instructions very carefully several times and each time the response on the screen was exactly as listed in the instructions, but alas the player will not play anything except Region 1 discs.

    Either the manufacturer has changed something
    Or the hack doesn't work at all. Not all dvd players can
    Be made region free. Especially anything made by Sony.
