Mine takes ~4 hours to convert a cd sized worth batch of .vob files to .mpg so I can burn it to VCD. Is there any way to speed up the process a bit, without getting a new processor? Does it take this long for everyone else as well ?

lyzic,
no, unless you're the developer of tmpg and know a few things to
release (i mean, improve, he, he... )
But, you'll need to take another look at your process/methods and see
where you can improve "effeciancies"
Also, your "encoding" method will have to be looked at as well.
* "rate control mode", ie CQ vs. CQ_VBR vs. CBR, etc.
* size, ie 352x480 vs. 720x480 vs. 352x240, etc.
* framerate, ie 23fps vs. 25 vs. 29
* color space, ie RGB vs YUY2 vs. YUV, etc.
* filters and their highest/lowest values you set them to, etc.
* ivtc, 32pulldown, inverse32, etc.
* GOP ?
* DCT
* motion search
* stream type, etc. etc. etc.
* not to mention your video stream BEFORE importing to TMPG may
have some speed affect, ie frameseving, using filters, etc prior
to importing to TMPG, etc., etc.
Increasing more RAM ain't gonna give must improvement at all, if you can
notice it at all.
But, in a whole, the all the above, is bascially an algorithem. Jugle these
around, (algorithem'ly speaking) and you could yield more speed, be it
1% or 5% or 20%
But, only in increasing your CPU will you really notice it, but it you increase
it to say, 100 or 200Mhz, then you wont really see much either ?? ie,
over-clocking, etc. your motherboard.
These are just a few to give you an idea of improvement adjustments.

something else you can try is under environmental options, increase the task priority.
or, do what a lot of people do...set it up before sleepy time, and let it work overnight--that way, even if it takes 4 or 6 hours, you won't be bothered by the encoding time
