  1. Thomson Electronics GE1101P @ Walmart $139

    VCD
    XVCD (720x480, at least 2000kb/s)
    SVCD
    XSVCD (720x480, at least 3500kb/s)

24fps film works at ALL modes, and those bitrates are just the most I've tested with - they could very well go further! I had to post this after reading about so many fancy DVD players not playing anything but DVDs. Hahahaha!

  2. Yeah, but why pay that at Wal-Mart when they sell the APEX 500W which plays EVERYTHING but 8 Track Tapes.......well you know what I mean. It goes for a normal price of $98 and even plays MP3 CDRS.

  4. I also laugh at the APEX fans who don't actually HAVE an APEX to witness the severe quality issues and bugs.

I wonder if this would this be a good time to point out that your GE1101P is made by the SAME company that makes several of the Apex DVD players.....??

  12. Hey GUTB,

Will it play DVD-R? What about MP3? Is the MP3 playback menu easy to read/control?

    Thanks!

  13. Apex does not manufacture DVD players. It simply contracts with production facilities to manufacture their various models. Many Apex, GE, Sampoo, etc models are actually produced my the same facilities and have the same features and quality sets.

The 1101P mentioned above is essentially a single disk version of the Apex 703. It's the same animal produced by the same company. Either model can be flashed using the same firmware. But neither GE or Apex manufacture the players. I belive they both are Shinco units.

  14. had to add this -

    GUTB you crack me up.
    Your qoute:

"I also laugh at the APEX fans who don't actually HAVE an APEX to witness the severe quality issues and bugs."

Guess what your 1101P is an 'Apex 703' player badged as a GE player. One is a single tray the other a three tray version. Same encoder boards etc etc...just different loaders. But both Shincos.

How does it feel to actually "HAVE" an Apex player in a GE case? Who's laughing now?

it says it plays DVD-R, unfortunatly, I do not have the ability to test it.

The MP3 menu is really easy.

I have had only one problem. It refuses to read from the "Segment" Directoy

  16. Here's the Shinco info which includes your 1101P and the 703:

    http://shincodvd.emuunlim.com/range.html

There are other sites that explain the 1101P and the 703 as essentially the same units but they escape me at the moment.

So how does it feel to be the pround owner of an GE-Apex (Shinco)? I'm happy you are satisfied with the quality of the 1101P. So much of this "mine is better than yours" is just simply personal opinion.

  17. So, will the GE player play mp3s like the Apex does?

If not, would it, after a firmware "upgrade" ?

  18. Greg12,

So basically if I have 10 MP3 albums on a CDR that are categorized by folders (10 seperate folders), this player can't read them? Are there any players that can read segmented MP3 folders on a CDR? Most of my MP3 CDR's are like this...10 albums per CD all with their own folders.

The GE5803P will play Mp3's. This is the GE 3 disk version of the Shinco produced model that also is badged as an Apex703. The Apex703 region free and macro free patched firmware can be installed on the 1101P though. I am not sure if it brings Mp3 capabilities to the 1101P. But I have heard of some Apex500 patches that will do this for 500 models that could not play Mp3's prior to the firmware upgrade. So I guess the answer is "maybe" but I'm not an expert when it comes to any of this.

  20. Ok the guy was asking for a bit of grief but as an owner of a
GE 1101p I can tell you it not only plays mp3's but that fact is listed on the box know it alls! Ok yes Shinco makes both players but they aren't exactly the same. I was told by a friend who sells them at Walmart that he personally takes back 5-6 defective Apex players a week. Not one GE player so far that was defective. i was going to buy the Apex 500w as it was $39. less he told me buy the GE you won't be sorry. Does that mean the Apex is crap no but they clearly have quality control problems. you either get one that works or not... By the way there is now a hack that lets the GE play mini DVD's also works with the Apex 703 and the GE 5903p

So much for know it alls....The reason the 1101P and the 500W are not exactly the same is because the 500W is not a Shinco. Yes it is an Apex branded player but it not manufactured by Shinco. Does the "expert" at Walmart know this?

The reason the "hack" works on the 5803P and the 703 is because they are essentially the same unit. Just a different case. The 1101P is a single tray model of the 5803P and the 703. Manufactured by the same company - Shinco. Same quality control. The 500W has nothing to do with any of these players.

  23. heh...i think it's agreed that pioneer dvd players are CONSISTENTLY the best. They are a little bit more expensive than the extrememly low end dvd players out there, but they are definitely worth the price. i was able to get a pioneer dv-333 from pricewatch for $179 shipped when the MSRP is $300

As for the extremely low end dvd players that ppl claim to be just as good as the middle-to-higher end dvd players, since i haven't had first-hand experience with them, i can't say for sure. however, after reading a lot of the comments on them, i think that most of them can do what ppl claim. however, the low-end ones, i.e. the apex, have poor quality control. if you r lucky enough to get one that works, good for you..you have a prefectly capable dvd player that, at least, initially is just as good as the higher end dvd players. however, the chance that you will get a screwed up apex dvd player is very high because apex uses cheaper stuff and have really bad quality control, so if you r lucky to get one that works, it's great. however, ppl haven't stated how long these cheap dvd players do in the long run. maybe they break down in a year or so...who knows...but for anyone wanting to invest in a long term dvd player...i suggest you go with the pioneer ones cuz they r really good
