You can watch past seasons of The Walking Dead via Netflix, but there is no legal option to watch the current season on a Roku except with the AMC Channel, for which you also need a subscription to a participating cable, satellite or telco provider and a package which includes AMC.

Some current season episodes of TV shows may be available via Hulu, CBS All Access, or the network's own channel. You will need to browse for the shows that you want to watch.

Here is a page showing Roku sports channels: https://channelstore.roku.com/browse/sports

For the most part, if you want to watch new/current broadcast TV, you need a cable/SAT subscription, or a subscription to a streaming service which offers the channels you want to watch. Regardless of the device, there is no free/legal way to access current programming.

Roku's and other similar devices are quite nice, you just misunderstood how they are used.

There are lots of benefits, just not the ones you want. It's not going to give you free television, but I love my Roku box anyway. For what you want you'd be better off buying an Android box with Kodi, one such as this one:
