First thing you have to check is if your DVD Player supports (S)VCDs. If it doesn't no matter how you try it won't work. If it does, then you can either clock AUTHOR under the HOW TO menu on the left.

  3. I would check out the Newbie Guides available at this site.

Look at the menu bar to your left. In the brown section, click "DVD Players". Look up your make and model of DVD player. Does it play CD-R format at all? Does it play VCD? SVCD? Every player is different, with different capabilities.

I am assuming that you want to burn some sort of video CD. If you are burning an audio CD, and it does not play on your DVD player, then again, check the "DVD Players" section. Your DVD player may not play CD-Rs at all, or it may play only certain brands of CD-Rs, or it may play only CD-RW.

If your player can't play what you need, you may want to check out an Apex DVD player, such as the AD-1500. They're very cheap, and they play everything.

I would use Nero, not Roxio/Adaptec, to burn your CD-R. This software has more capabilities. In particular, it can burn non-standard (high quality, higher bitrate) VCD and SVCD.
