    Hey all,

Despite my total ignorance regarding video editing jargon, I had VirtualDub/FFDShow/AviSynth working great on my old computer.

Now trying to set it all up on the new machine I get the old, 'Cant decompress fourcc jargon jargon jargon'.

So I try to install FFDShow...but it doesn't fix it.

The standard tutorial mentions telling FFDShow where your VirtualDub plugins directory is...but my FFDShow install never lets me specify that.

    So the Problem is:

How do I set the plugins directory for FFDShow?

-It does not ask during install, I've tried 3 times now. I tried installing the program in the VirtualDub dir and the Plugins dir.. no go.
-There is no way I can find to setup/config FFDShow other than to download it and run its installer.

Is it a problem that I am installing everything on my D: drive to save space on my small SSD C: drive?

Yes, I know, these programs are for people who love to dive into the tech details that I'm too lazy to learn.

But once its running, I love VirtualDub's many features that nothing else has (Filmora won't do Sharpening for example.)

    Thanks for any clues!

  2. In ffdshow enable the VFW decoder for the codec used in your source.

If you are using 32 bit VirtualDub you need 32 bit AviSynth and 32 bit ffdshow, 32 bit filters, etc. If you are using 64 bit VirtualDub you need 64 bit AviSynth and 64 bit ffdshow, 64 bit filters, etc.

Still haven't figured out how to tell it where my VD plugins dir is, but I got it working.

Obviously if you want to configure a program called, 'ffdshow' you go to, 'VFW Configuration'. Duh. How did I not guess that?

Then obviously if you want to actually use any formats such as .mpeg you have to enable them, because obviously you want all functionality disabled by default. Duh.

Oh well, I made this step work against it's will anyway....

  4. VirtualDub's plugins and plugins32 folder are in the same folder as virtualdub.exe.

  5. When you install ffdshow there's options for installing Avisynth and VirtualDub plugins. They're not decoding plugins though. They let you use ffdshow's filters. The Avisynth plugin is added to the Avisynth plugins folder automatically.

    ffdshow(preset="somepreset")

If you have a preset setup in ffdshow called "somepreset" and the Picture Properties filter is enabled for it (as an example), the above line in a script will let you use it to adjust brightness or contrast etc although you might have to reload the script whenever you change something in order top see the change.

The installer asks where your VirtualDub plugins folder is if the plugin option is selected (it did for me just now when I tested) it, and it'll add ffvdub.vdf, which adds ffdshow's filters to VirtualDub's filter list and you can use them without ffdshow doing the decoding. The filters will probably all work for mpeg4 ASP but I'm not sure about other video types.

Have you tried the FFmpeg Input Driver plugin? It'll open and decode a large variety video audio types in various containers directly. No need to open video via Avisynth, unless of course you want to. Nothing wrong with that.
