Hi guys
Noob here and I am scratching my head at all the different kinds of hardware setups to capture an analog VHS signal.
My problem started when I tried to capture some tape from my dad's old sony ccd-tr72 sony handycam. I thought my extremecap u3 would possibly work but I don't know if Avermedia provides a s-video/composite dongle. I know it has a component dongle, but that's useless for this camera. Does anyone know if there is such a thing?
Should I just opt for a USB type dongle to capture the feed? That seems easier, but I have no idea where to start. I would like to capture as much quality as possible without resorting to PCI cards because I don't have a desktop PC, just a laptop. Thanks for any help, you guys.

After a lot of searching for a way to record composite video with this device, I have come to the conclusion that composite video capture is probably not supported. There is no composite video breakout cable for this device sold separately as an optional accessory, and no indication that it is possible to use any one of the component video ports for composite video capture, with composite video selected as the video input in the capture software.
Yes a USB-stick type capture device is the easiest and least expensive solution. The Hauppauge USB-Live 2 is well-liked by some members here.
There have also been some favorable comments regarding the I-O DATA GV-USB2. The documentation and user interface for the included software are in Japanese, but it is possible to use other software like AmarecTV.Ignore list: hello_hello, tried, TechLord, Snoopy329 -
Thank you so much for looking into that composite cable and your help. I also looked around and could find it, oh well, I thought I'd at least see if I could use it. I ended up borrowing my friend's black magic Intensity Shuttle USB and it captures the feed very nicely in Virtualdub. Thanks for suggesting the GV-USB2, it looks like a pretty solid device!
