  1. I want to capture a 640x480 VGA signal, and to do so I drew from my parts box: A Pinnacle Dazzle and an unbranded VGA to S-video/composite adapter.

Now the fun starts. I lost the CD that came with the Dazzle and Pinnacle basically told me to go **** myself because my product is no longer supported.
So I installed the driver and downloaded NCH Debut Video Capture Software.

I tested this setup with the composite output of a Raspberry Pi, and the Dazzle works fine.

Now the VGA part. When I connect the adapter via composite to my laptop it does not even detect it.
When I connect the S-video cable to the Dazzle, Windows 10 sees a new monitor with 1366x768 as the only option (greyed out).
However, running Debut shows a blue screen no matter which options I try.
Okay, actually selecting PAL produces a black screen instead.

    Any idea what to try?

There are various topics on here about these adapters. Some are better than others. Some are for specific tasks like connecting a laptop to a tv.

If the vga output you are trying to capture from is not pinned for composite/s-video, a simple adapter is never going to work. To discount the Pinnacle I would connect the adapter from the vga direct to a tv composite. If you still do not see the output then you need a bespoke cable/adapter which converts the signal and requires its own power.
