  1. Hi
I've been using VirtualDub & TMPeng for a while to convert DivX to VCD. I have just downloaded 2 files that have me perplexed. Both play perfectly well through Windows Media Player, & I have the latest Nimo Codec pack installed.

File 1, if I try to open this in VirtualDub, I get "Cannot determine the file type of "Filename.avi". If I try to view the file information with AVIinfo, AVIinfo locks up. If I open the file with Windows Media Player & view it's properties, it lists the Bitrate as unknown, Media Type as Video, AudioCodec as Morgan Stream Switcher & Video Codec as Subtitle Mixer?

File 2, this is a DivX DVD Rip. I can open it with VirtualDub, but when I try to extract the audio I using Full Processing, No conversion & No compression (PCM) I get a VirtualDub error saying, The requested Audio compression is not compatible with the input format. Check the sampling rate & channel count match those of the requested format. If I use AVIinfo & view the file details, it lists the audio as Wave Type 8192 Unknown Format, Samples 48000, Bit Depth 0 & Channels 5. I'm guessing this is AC3?

Can anyone offer any help or advice? I'm following the DivX to VCD guide on this site which has always worked in the past.

    Thanx

  3. A bit more info, I've opened File 2 in AviUtl Version 0.97f, if I go to the Audio Compression Codec, it automatically selects PCM 48000 16 bit 5 Channels 468 kbs. This PCM doesn't appear in Virtual Dub under PCM compression, even with the "show all" ticked ?

I've tried selecting another compression format, standard PCM stereo & saved the file, but it had no sound. So I'm going to re-try with the PCM 5 channel selected to see if that allow VirtualDub to open it.

I can't open File 1 in AviUtl, it returns unsuported format.

  5. Hi,
Since posting my previous reply, ,I've found a utility called AVI2VCD at this address.
    http://www.mnsi.net/~jschlic1/
It comes in 2 parts, one of them being a decompressor. Launch the decompressor, select your AVI file & let it decompress it. Unlike VirtualDub it works. 8) You can then extract the audio from the decompressed file if you want, or do a straight re-encode using TMPEnc. Hope this helps. It worked for me. :P The only thing I noticed was a slight loss in volume on the decompressed file. But this can be easily rectified.
