    hi, I got a personal DVD (no drm) with video that I wish to edit, slipt, joint, add sfx and export.

    which program should I use and which format should I first convert my dvd disk to, so that sony vegas or any other editing program could read?

    I wouldn't convert it, just extract the MPEG video with a program like DVDVob2Mpg, then edit that.
    Re-encoding or converting to a different format will just give you more quality loss.

    If you want to edit with Vegas, all you have to do is drag VTS_01_0.IFO from the VIDEO_TS folder onto the timeline.
