i have no idea how to approach what i need to do, so i figured i would try to find some professionals to point me in the right direction.

My son, he loves youtube, he can watch it for hours and hours watching people play and commentate on video game, he has decided he wants to give it a try as well.

So, my question is this: how can i help him make good quality recordings and editing... he is only 7 so naturally i will be the one doing the blunt of the work...
are there and good out of the box software a noob could use and catch on quickly? something super user friendly.... what all would i need? where can i get it? what kind of capturing devises would i need? external cameras? elaborate

MrDiamond, in the future please use a more descriptive subject title in your posts to allow others to search for similar topics. I will change yours this time. From our rules:
Try to choose a subject that describes your topic.
Please do not use topic subjects like Help me!!! or Problems.
    Thanks,

You need provide more details, at first hardware and software specification - forum need to know what kind of computer hardware you have for this, secondly i think it will be nice to describe your games (used resolutions etc).
Video editing will be i think limited to cut and trim plus additional voice track as commentary to mix with original game audio.
You can check software section - there are two groups of editors - simple video editor and advanced - i would go for any free ware editor offering such capability.
Capture is tricky part - perhaps you can use one of vendor specific technologies for capturing video - NVidia offer ShadowPlay for such things.

  5. Also describe what TYPE of commentary video. There are various different styles and kinds. eg. Is it a simple single overlay (his face) , or multiple co-op player with multiple players /faces ? Live or non live ? His game play or someone else's ? What game and device (e.g. PC game, PS4, xbox etc...) - that determines what hardware or software you might be able to use for game capturing. Or is it "offline" recorded from other games ? . "Commentary" implies audio, so at least a microphone is required, but if you have overlays of his face, then at least a camera or even a webcam

  6. don't most gamers who stream use OBS? At least that is what I thought. Honestly, I would look to a gamer forum for this sort of advice. This forum is populated mainly by people who do other types of video work e.g. old VHS captures.

  7. Here is a very good tutorial from a fairly successful Youtuber and Twitch streamer (Matt Malone/showdown1983), covering OBS, Twitch, chat overlays, plugins, mikes, monitors, and most importantly, connecting with the audience. He mostly does auto racing simulators, but the advice would apply everywhere, I think.
