  1. For my particular application the Avermedia live gamer portable is a perfect solution, apart from the fact that you cannot capture composite for older devices. So with this in mind what are the alternatives. My requirements are:

    1) All encoding on the device to free up CPU

    2) ability to record to SD card without a computer

    3) Ability to connect to a computer and preview live stream in VLC or OBS.

    4) support for HDMI and composite capture (for older devices)

    5) Must be powered by USB and not extra power supplies.

So in other words something identical to the Avermedia live gamer portable, but with support for composite video. I stress it must be powered by USB.

    Does anyone have any suggestions?

    Regarding the HD-PVR Rocket...

    1. Yes.
    2. There is no SD card slot. It records to a USB thumb drive instead.
    3. The HD-PVR Rocket is supposed to be compatible with OBS, and VLC can play its recordings, but I don't know if it is possible to preview the live output from the HD-PVR Rocket with either of them.
    4. Yes, but you need to buy the A/V breakout cable separately: http://www.hauppauge.com/site/webstore2/webstore_av_cable_hvr2250.html
    5. Yes, it is USB bus powered.
