I use Nvidia Shadowplay to record captures from old computer emulators like WinUAE with the settings 480p, 30fps and 50mbps, and whilst the resulting MP4 files have been dependent on how much screen activity there is, I have been able to use the Normal settings on Handbrake to re-encode them to smaller MP4s, down to a third of the original size.
Today, I have been experimenting with AviSynth and I find the results quite promising, but I am now after a good, straightforward MP4 encoder for those AviSynth scripts, and I have had a fraught search. BTW, I tried ERightSoft Super and I had a nightmare using the installer, as my PC was flooded with all manner of adware, spyware and god knows what else! I've only just recovered from it these last couple of hours! Using System Restore in Safe Mode did it for me, now everything seems back to normal.
So if anyone knows of a good encoder (if it has to be AVI output, I'm willing to accept it) that supports AviSynth, that would be helpful.

There are several. I use RipBot264. Then there's XviD4PSP, Simple x264/x265 Launcher, StaxRip, MeGUI, Hybrid, the CLI x264 Encoder. And many more, I expect.

And if you want to keep using HandBrakie with avisynth scripts there is

Also Xmedia Recode (an excellent ffmpeg GUI), ffmpeg (command line), and VirtualDub (getting MP4 output requires using external encoders)
