  1. I have an old KDS 17 in monitor. Recently I got information on the Nvidia control console for the onboard video.

Are there any tips to sharpening the edges on the desktop image?

It may be the age of the screen but it looks like I am losing sharpness. I can't express it any other way.

Increasing resolution from 1024 to 1280-- this monitor's limit-- will shrink all my
    icons.

Old CRT monitors may lose sharpness over time. Going up to 1280 may help a little - usually somewhere in the OS there is a place to increase
    the icon size.

Either that or upgrade to a new LCD screen

There is no way you can improve this in software. You have to adjust the monitor's convergence controls. If you already did that and can't get it any better and it's still blurrly in the corners then you pretty much have to live with it.

Increasing the resolution will certainly not help – rather the opposite!

  4. CRT's as mentioned may loose some focus with time, re-adjustment is required (but it may be not possible if electron gun deteriorated to much), going to higher resolution as also mentioned will only increase problem. You may try to reduce vertical refresh rate to partially reduce bandwidth and as such improve sharpness or go to junk yard and search for CRT in better shape... (or adjust your own - procedure is usually well described in service manual - be aware that you may with improper adjustment make problem worse).

In theory there is possibility to improve perceived sharpness by applying sharpener filter (edge differentiate) also monitor itself may have such possibility (check monitor menu).

Something else just came to my mind: ClearType! Be sure to turn it off, it does not work on CRTs and causes blurry colored text.
