  1. Hello!

Trying to get a new job and want to impress with my editing "skills".
I want to get bits and pieces from several 12 hour video's that's on YouTube, what tool(s) is the best to use? Trying to download them with DownloadHelper they're 4GB with super slow download speed.
Then I'm going to use Sony Vegas to edit the clips together, but I don't know anything about encoding, either the video's become HUGE or really bad quality. Guessing there's a better codec(?) to download instead of using the built in ones.

    Really, really appreciate the help!

    Thanks,
    Martin

  2. I hope your future boss doesn't see this. I know I'd never hire you, based on what you've written.

Anyway, why not just download the entire videos? I could be wrong, but I've never read of a method to download just the parts you might want from a long video. Get the complete videos and then cut them into pieces. Maybe someone else knows of a way to get just the sections you want. Maybe post a link so we can have a look.

  3. The job has nothing to do with editing what so ever, I'd never apply for a job where I didn't even know the basics. It's just icing on the beautiful Martin-cake.

I can download them, but it would take weeks, it's 30x4GB with super slow download speeds, but if that's what I got to do I'll get started now. What about screen capture software?
If I link you the video's, then you'd almost be able to guess who I am, it's very niche. It's like any 1080p 12-hour 4GB video.

  4. You can use clipconverter.cc to specify start time / end time of segments to re-encode

Important: That' s not downloading parts from the original streamed file, that's re-encoding at a lower quality (and as you probably know, YT is already pretty low quality). A real editor on a real project would never use that, they would start with the highest quality source possible, which means downloading the highest quality source possible

Yes, but that requires reencoding what is, as pdr said already, heavily compressed to begin with. Ideally, if you really have to use YouTube as your source, you don't want to reencode it any more than necessary. One such commercial screen capture program is Replay Video Catcher. pdr mentioned one where you can type in start and stop times. Using Replay you have Start and Stop buttons to begin and end the captures.

I use the website below to save any of the versions available on youtube. For 1080p and 4K videos, you have to download the audio also and mux them together. This site only works for videos which are not protected by youtube. Just right click on the URL hyperlink and "save as". You probably only want the MP4 version and not the WEBM, as most video editors probably won't be able to handle WEBM (VP9).
