[SOLVED]: Simplest subtitle program to correct a sync problem

I have a DVD of a Portuguese language film - I have ripped to to mkv using makemkv. It works nicely.

• The problem I have is there are no English subtitles on the disc.
  
• I found several sets of English subtitles but all of them are either badly done or way off in timing except for one.
  
• It needs to start a bit earlier, BUT!
  
• Not being familiar with Portuguese or the sound of the language I found it hard going using my old favourite Subtitle Workshop
  
• I found towards the end of the film a dedication 01:32:19,444 --> 01:32:22,345
  "TO MY PARENTS" on the SRT and on the screen the Portuguese aos meus pais - This would be a good point to sync to and lock it in and then run back to the beginning and see how it looks. It should be easy but it eludes me

I would appreciate any recommendations to the most suitable program to use - many thanks

Follow Up

What I'm actually after is the best subtitle program to sync up the SRT file with the visual cues on the movie, not to the soundtrack which one would do normally. Most of the sound track is music with the dialog deliberately submerged somewhat.

If you got the Portuguese sub with time codes I would use those to make a "point sync" for the English in Subtitle Edit.

Why don't you just use Subtitle Workshop's Edit -> Timings... tools? It will let you move all or a selected portion of subtitles forward or back, shrink or expand the running time, etc. It even has a option to set the times of the first and last subtitles and it automatically adjusts the timing of every sub.

I used Aegisub32 and finally started the subs 5 seconds earlier. This was near enough taking into account the time difference in words used to convey a sentence between the 2 languages. I saved it as an ASS file and works quite well. I think I had a mental block with this one but sleeping on it seems to have worked. Thanks to all

Although a bit old for simple time shift and speed change jobs I'm still using Subtitle Tool.
