  1. Fair warning, I'm a complete newbie at this.
By "standard", I mean a video DVD with the Video_RM and Video_TS folders on it that was created by recording a TV show on my DVD recorder.

Often, when I record a show for my wife, I start the recording early so as not to miss the beginning. I would like to be able to cut the (typically) first 5 - 10 minutes from the recorded video, then save the remainder in the same format as the original DVD,

I was foolish enough to think this would be a simple process, but my efforts to find software that will do this for me have been in vain. I found utilities to edit the .vob file to eliminate the beginning, but that did nothing to modify the related files so the video is playable in wife's car DVD player.

    Any pointers/suggestions gratefully accepted!

Have you tried VideoReDo TV Suite? It isn't free, but there is a fully functional trial. It is designed to cut mpeg2 found in DVD-video, and can output as DVD as well.

  3. Alternate method 1, and freeware. Open all the VOBs in DGIndex. Use the [ and ] buttons to isolate the part you want (remove the unwanted beginning). Go File->Save Project file and Demux Video. That will give you the video as an M2V file and the audio as whatever it is (AC3, WAV, whatever) and a D2V file you can delete. Take note of any delay mentioned in the name of the audio file.

Open the video and then the audio in Muxman. Set the delay for the audio if there was one (or remove it entirely in advance using DelayCut). Give it a destination and let Muxman reauthor your DVD. When done test it out before burning to disc using ImgBurn.

Alternate method 2, and freeware. Use DVDShrink in Reauthor Mode to remove the opening you don't want followed by reauthoring the DVD. Here's a guide (follow just the opening section about cutting and reauthoring):

  4. You can do it in DVDStyler as long as you don't have more than one video (title) in a titleset.

  5. Doesn't the DVD recorder have a simple editor that lets you set the start/end points?

I've never used it but PgcEdit might let you set a new starting point for playback.

  6. Thank you all very much for your helpful suggestions! I'll try the software you've identified. FWIW, yes, the recorder lets me specify the start and end times for recording. However, I am recording shows from Korean channels on DirecTV, and the schedule times are often not accurate. So to be safe, I start early and end late to be sure I get it all.
    Thanks again, everybody!

No, I meant some (most?) DVD recorders have an editing feature that lets you trim the video after it's been recorded.

  8. Thanks for that jagabo! I'll dig up the manual and check into it.
