I'm running Windows 2000 Professional and if I open the Windows Explorer, the hourglass triggers about every three seconds.

I look at the Task List (by pressing CTRL-ALT-DEL) and I do not see anything there that looks odd. The CPU usage jumps from 1% idle to 14% each time this happens. It is almost like Explorer is looking for the floppy or updating at this interval.

Recently, I checked my laptop which has a dual-boot Windows 98 and Windows 2000. The 2000 Windows Explorer does the same thing!

I’d appreciate any help in troubleshooting this problem.
