After reading through some threads here about setups for capturing VHS, I admit my head is to some degree spinning in regards to the best setup for achieving the best quality results. I have over a hundred VHS tapes (none are macrovision) which I am preparing to capture with the end goal being ingesting into Premiere CC for editing, eventually exporting for digital archive and uploading to video sharing sites like Vimeo and YouTube. I don't want to start down this road without some guidance as to best practices.

My current setup is the PC described in my signature. The capture device I own is the StarTech USB3HDCAP connected to a SIIG USB3.0 PCI-e expansion card that uses the Renesas drivers. I have verified that it's functioning properly in both StarTech's included StreamCatcher and VirtualDub.

I plan to connect a refurbished JVC HR-S7800U SVHS VHS VCR (on order currently, arriving in a few days) directly to this device via component output, using the internal TBC on the VCR during captures.

I plan to capture uncompressed HuffYUV using VirtualDub to a CalDigit VR RAID 1 hard drive connected via FireWire 800.

My question is, do any of you who have experience with this process see any potential issues with this particular hardware configuration and workflow?

Also, might someone be able to point me to a sufficient tutorial/guide to VirtualDub and settings with a nod towards capturing VHS or analog sources? I am not a beginner but even with my experience I feel a bit confounded by the wealth of various settings and filters in VirtualDub.

Forgive me if a lot of this falls under "asked and answered", if that is the case I will do more searching of existing forum content.

I'd suggest using the S-Video connection whenever possible.

Why S-video over component? I would assume it would be the opposite?

This VHS has component out? That machine is nearly identical to my Philips VR-1100.

  5. There is no 'component' out on this model. I think you are maybe confusing 'component' with 'composite' video outputs?....
As hech54 says - use the S-video output for best results..

I hope you have better luck with audio sync than I did. I use another StarTech device, the SVID2USB2. The audio is ALWAYS offset in my VirtualDub captures. No amount of tweaking the poorly-documented settings fixed it. So now I use AmaRecTV, which has no such problem.

Expect to see the "NO SIGNAL" screen flashing during your VHS captures unless you add an extra device to do frame sync.

I am well aware of the difference between component and composite. I was simply mistaken, did not look closely enough at the specs on that unit, it doesn't have component output.

Thanks for the input, and that link vaporeon800. I had briefly reviewed that thread but I only have so many hours due to a heavy work schedule so I missed that. Do you have another capture device that you prefer over the StarTech for this type of workflow?

After reading a bit further I've decided to give up on this workflow in favor of a more professional capture device. Thanks again for the input.
