I know that this subject is often posted here and I will admit to being a newbie when it comes to burning DVDs
I have tried the guides found on this website, over on Doom9 and also some other websites I have found. In all I have tried to use 5 different guides for taking one dual layer DVD and putting it on 2 DVD-Rs, none of them work. I have spent almost 45 days reading all the information I can find on this subject, looked at many websites, read many forums and still have found nothing that will help me to get a working copy of a DVD9.
The guides are either incomplete, not working or very wrong. My wife and I have followed these guides to the letter and each time I get a DVD-R that does not work on a stand alone or a DVD rom
I dont want to reduce the quilty of the movie, I just want to be able to spilt the one DVD9 onto two working DVD-Rs.
Has anyone found a guide that works and that can be followed by a newbie? I have burned many DVD5s but not a DVD9 as of yet.
Is there a software program that does this? A working guide? A website that tells you how to do it? Any way at all to get this to work?
The person that wrote the guide here even admits that he does not even own a DVD burner and has no idea if his guide even works. The other guides leave way to much information out, some guides would only work if you RIP the same movie that they have done. Plus they all assume that you know for a fact how to re-program the DVD IFOs, know for a fact which file is the title set and the rest of this very confusing mess of DVD9s. I have tried to e-mail the people that wrote these guides but after 3 weeks I have not seen a reply.
Please please please help me.
Any and all help would be great and thank you.

Has anyone taken one DVD9 or DVD10 and split it onto 2 DVD-Rs?
Have you been able to make this work?
Anyone?
I am to the point of being very happy to pay for this information.
Thanks

PS
Has anyone heard of any updates in regards to DVD17 or DVD18? -
My success rate for splitting dual layer dvds so they fit on 4.7 gig dvds is about 90%. However I have to use the chapter search feature on my pioneer 343 dvd player to view the dvd. I load chapter 1 and it plays fine, there is no working menu however but I do not mind since the quality is the same as the original. The 10% that I have had issues with has been the fact that the director commentary plays instead of the movie audio, the video is fine.
Your problem may be related to the chapter search function, if your dvd player has this give it a try. My dvd 5's are exact copies of the original with menu's that work perfectly. But as you can tell I am not an expert but I hope this can help some. I use Ifoedit.9 to split to 2 dvds after ripping the entire disc contents using dvd decrypter. Just remember that the ifo file that you split is the same number as where the main movie is. After the split is done copy the first 3 files which are vts files to each split dvd. I then edit the chapter info as shown on doom9 guide. Remove region and pup stuff and the last thing I do is get vts sectors- all this is done in ifoedit. Make sure after each step ie region free, pup, that you save the resulting file. get vts auto saves for you. Then I move the 2 dvd's I have created to 2 seperate VIDEO_TS folders and burn one at a time using the doom9 guide in nero.
Sorry this is confusing but it may help. -
Thanks byrdmaniac69, after reading your post some of this starts to make sense
Yes, it does help, thanks.
dearlilie, just went to the website and it looks very promising. I shall download and use it tonight after I get home from work, thank you
Thanks for the help and info.
Before this weekend is over I hope to have at least done one DVD9 to 2 DVD-Rs and have it work
And I thought ISOs where hard when I first started.
Thanks again,

Update:
www.jummpa.com is a bad joke gone wrong
A bunch of freeware programs that they are selling plus there instructions sound as if the person was on drugs when it was written.
I have spent countless hours on the net, tried many programs and I still have the same old problem... no one is writing a COMPLETE guide for DVD-9 to 2 DVD-Rs.
Has anyone found a guide that works?
Has anyone found a program that works?
Can anyone help, please?
I will pay money if I have too as long as the guide/program works.
I want to take one DVD9 and put it onto two DVD-Rs, I want an exact copy without removing anything and without killing the audio.
Please someone help.
Any websites that list Single layer DVD movies? I have the list from this forum already. I have tried Amazon.com but only about half of their DVD moves state dual or single layer.
Thanks

I have had great success with the guide on Doom9 and IFOedit. One thing that isn't very clear is that all your ifos should be on both discs for menus. My Pioneer 343 also acts flaky sometimes with the menus but my Apex 500w plays everything like a champ. Good luck

RedCorvus if the movie is bigger than 4.7gb and you just want to split it then follow the my guide below it works 100% let me know how you get on.
1: DO A FULL RIP OF DVD TO HARD DRIVE
2: OPEN INFOEDIT AND SELECT IFO OF MAIN MOVIE THEN SELECT VOB EXTRAS FROM TOP MENU AND THEN SELECT SPLIT TO 2 DVDRS. HAVE SELECTED REMOVE POPUPS, REMOVE MACROVISION, ADJUST VOB UNIT POINTERS & ADJUST AUDIO/SUBP POINT, CORRECT VOB UNIT, CORRECT IFO TABLES, AND SPLIT TO 2 DVD-RS, IF THE VOBIDS NEED STRIPPED ALSO SELECT STRIP VOBIDS. SELECT YOUR 2 DESTINATION DIRECTORIES AND PRESS OK CHOOSE THE SPLIT POINT AND VOBIDS (IF SELECTED) THEN LET INFOEDIT PROCESS THE VOBS.
3: WHEN THIS HAS COMPLETED YOU WILL HAVE VTS_01_0.BUP AND VTS_01_0.IFO PLUS A FEW VOB FILES VTS_01_1 VTS_01_2 ETC IN THE 2 FOLDERS.
4: OPEN INFOEDIT AGAIN AND SELECT THE NEW INFO FILE FROM YOUR FIRST SPLIT FOLDER THE SELECT VOB EXTRAS AND TICK BOXES CORRECT VOB UNIT, CORRECT IFO TABLES AND CREATE NEW VIDEO_TS.IFO & VTS_01_0.IFO. SELECT A DESTINATION FOLDER FOR THESE FILES YOU CAN USE THE SAME FOLDER BUT I PREFER TO USE ANOTHER FOLDER THEN COPY THE NEW FILES TO THE EXISTING FOLDER. WHEN THIS IS COMPLETED YOU WILL HAVE NEW VIDEO_TS.IFO, VIDEO_TS.BUP AND VTS_01.0.IFO AND VTS_01.0.BUP IF YOU PUT THESE INTO A NEW FOLDER COPY THEM TO THE ORIGINAL FOLDER AND REPLACE THE ORIGINALS.
5: NOW OPEN INFOEDIT AGAIN AND SELECT VTS_01_0.IFO FROM ONE OF THE SPLIT FOLDER AND SELECT GET VTS SECTORS AND KEEP PRESSING OK UNTIL IT FINISHES THEN CLOSE INFOEDIT.
6: OPEN INFOEDIT AGAIN AND NOW SELECT THE VIDEO_TS.IFO FROM THE SAME FOLDER AND SELECT GET VTS SECTORS SELECT YES WHEN PROMPTED AND OK UNTIL IT HAS FINISHED THEN EXIT, WHEN PROMPTED THAT YOU ARE EXITING WITHOUT SAVING CHANGES JUST SELECT YES AS CHANGES ARE SAVED AUTOMATICALLY.
7: REPEAT PROCESSES 4.5.6. FOR SECOND SPLIT FOLDER.
8: BEFORE BURNING MAKE SURE THE FOLDERS ARE NAMED VIDEO_TS. -
Thanks for the help Apollo, but now a few newbie questions if you dont mind
The main movie is VTS_02 but after I am done with step 4, I have the new files but they are now VTS_01, can I just rename the VTS_01 to VTS_02?
Do I still have to edit the VIDEO_TS.IFO for the number of chapters on each disk?
Do I have to put all the extras on the first DVD-R?
And all IFO files from the DVD must be on both DVD-R, correct?
Sorry for the newbie questions, but sooner or later I am going to get the hang of this. I do appreciate all the help from everyone
Quickly running out of single layer DVDs -
Hi RedCorvus
I am a newbie to this also but I will help as much as I can. First of all the above method, I have only tried with movie only without extras so I can't answer the question about the extras.
After step 2 the new files will be named VTS_01 you don't need to rename them just leave them as they are.
You don't need to adjust the chapters in the VIDEO_TS.IFO either this is done automatically. I know this is mentioned in one of the guides but that is because the VIDEO_TS.IFO it copied directly from the original where as the above method it it generated by infoedit. (someone correct me if I'm wrong as I probably am)
You don't need to put any more of the IFOs from the DVD only those that have been generated by the above process.
When the each of the VIDEO_TS folders are ready to be recorded you should have in them the following. You don't need anything else for the movie only.
VIDEO_TS.BUP
VIDEO_TS.IFO
VTS_01_0.IFO
VTS_01_0.BUP
VTS_01_**.VOBs
Ps. do yourself a favour and get a DVD-RW for testing
