  1. I have a DVD with CRC errors.

I have tried DVD shrink, it showed a CRC error and stopped. I tried Handbrake, it only copied 30min rather than 1 hour.

I tried "copy it anyway", it was taking ages and the time remaining kept increasing and once the time remaining went up to 9 hours and would've gone more, and the percentage was stuck at 11%, it showed a log of a bunch of CRC errors e.g.

518651904 ATA ERROR (CYCLIC REDUNDANCY CHECK)
518754304 ATA ERROR (CYCLIC REDUNDANCY CHECK)
518856704 ATA ERROR (CYCLIC REDUNDANCY CHECK)

Maybe it'd have progressed eventually but it was much slower than it'd have been to just watch the DVD from start to finish.

    I aborted it.

When I put the DVD in then a media player window pops up and starts playing it.

If I could just capture it from media player with sound then that would be good. I'd like a good way of doing that. I don't really want to lose resolution either.

Even if it took 1hr which is the length of the video itself and required me to play the whole thing, then that wouldn't be so bad, it'd still be quicker and more effective than the copies that i've tried that fail.

How can I do that? / What can I do?

    TIA

DVD shrink cannot handle newer DVD encryption
You need a program that can handle the encryption such as
    Dvdfab. - http://www.dvdfab.cn/download.htm

I'll try it, but when I get CRC errors what makes you so sure it's encryption?

  4. DVDfab won't start for some reason. Anydvd gives a fileio error. Anydvd says "Media is not CSS protected." So I don't think there is encryption on it.

Media player can play it, so what programs can I use to play it and output it to a file while it plays?

I know you mean well, but you are not going to be able to debug why dvdfab won't start properly, you didn't write dvdfab. It did offer a popup feedback bug report window and i've sent them a message about it and we'll see what they say. It's from a course I did years ago. The OS is windows 7 and not the problem.

If I could play it in a program like VLC or Media Player and stream it into a file then it could solve it. Can anybody advise with how to do that? I have posted in a section on a forum about *streaming* so I was hoping that somebody would have a nice easy solution to get it from being played, into a file.

But did you watch past "11%" ? Does it pause or stop around that point all the other software have problems with ?

Another option - you can have a look at isobuster or related programs that can read from damaged discs.

if VLC will play it you can record it, or do a screen capture with videoreplay

CRC (CYCLIC REDUNDANCY CHECK) errors have to due with errors reading data off the disk. The data being copied off the disk is not matching the provided CRC hash. So either the disk is dirty/scratched, the drive is failing, or the dye in the disk is failing if you burned the disk yourself.
