Could you try for example with this : -b:v 5000k -preset slow -rc vbr_2pass -rc-lookahead 32 -spatial_aq 1

Just me, or are those clips not smooth? I checked both 5mbit ones. Especially noticeable in the ripples for example.

I just read that some media player decoders have trouble with the ffmpeg nvenc HEVC files. Here's the same files encoded with the other main program, Rigaya's NVEncC. They might play back smoother. I included a simple sample command used and log files

Nvencc give better quality than ffmpeg for AVC does it come from ffmpeg only use 1 ref frame for AVC by default ??? you should try with -refs 3 or more to see the difference.

with ffmpeg hevc_nvenc option -spatial_aq 1 does it's job when you look the grass in parkrun scene.

There are also more options like -temporal_aq or main10 profile to try.

I have a question regarding this subject. I have just purchased a brand new Nvidia RTX card with the intention of converting to H265. This card has Turing built in & is supposedly able to work fast. I have a purchased copy of TMPGenc Video Mastering Works (latest upgrade), & have the settings selected for NVENC in the software set properly (as far as I know?).

However, when I convert a file that's 25 minutes long with the software it takes 25 minutes in H264, But in H265 the same file threatens to take under 8 HOURS!!!!

I haven't tried with Handbrake yet, but have done so with the official DVDFab I have, which only takes a few minutes, but it reduces the quality even when set at High Quality.

I have my doubts about so called support in TMPGenc, & the High Quality setting in DVDFab ain't that great either. I may have to stick with Handbrake for doing things such as this, but I'm very annoyed at the fact that there's software out in the market that make all of these wonderful claims that we pay for, but don't do what they make bold claims about!!!

Check with the Task Manager whether your GPU is used at all.
It may be more reliable to do some encoding tests via commandline first, before using some GUI or SW package.

If you need editing as well as encoding, Shotcut is a great simple editor, and again supports AMD/Nvidia hardware H264/5 encoding.

Handbrake is free and open source, I don't have an nvidia GPU and refuse to use it for its terrible AAC support though.

A's Video Converter is a simple and again absolutely free tool to batch convert files to H264/265 with GPU acceleration.

I recently helped a friend set it up, they were seeing 400+ fps H265 encoding with no CPU usage. I use A's regularly to batch H265 encode with my AMD GPU.

I thought I was going to bust a gut laughing at your silliness.

Pegasys' software, Video Mastering Works, is not one of the "scams" you are referring to, like the old Imtoo encoders, Pegasys actually licenses x264 and x265 from the developer's and integrates it with their blessings and support, go read the press releases by both parties. The also license the hardware encoders as well.

As far as Shotcut goes, I like Shotcut a lot, I use it and consider it the best option on Linux but if one is using Windows, as this poster obviously is, Shotcut can't match the commercial products like TMPG VMW.
