  1. Hey all,
I have some very large avi files. these were digital conversions from Hi 8 video tapes. I'd like to be able to go in and 'trim' the files, i.e. when they did the capture they just captured everything that was on the tape, so in some instances I have only 15 min of footage off of a 2 hr tape. The files sizes for the 2 hr capture are generally 24 gig so I have a vested interest in trying to shrink the size of the AVI file if there are portions of it that I don't need.

I have Edius Neo 3 and understand that I can do something that way, but that will not operate on the native AVI file, I'm looking for something that will let me change/edit the native AVI file.

    Thanks

    Mark

make sure you set video=>direct stream copy , audio=>direct stream copy. You can mark in/ mark out a section and file=> save as avi and choose a location and different filename . That stream copies a section to keep . Original file will not be overwritten. If original file used I-frame only compression, you can cut anywhere arbitrarily. If it used temporal compression, you must cut on specific locations, keyframes. From that filesize, likely I-frame only compression . If you don't know, use mediainfo view=>text

The compression is listed as "lossy" will that make a difference?

Not a bit. It's most likely DV AVI, although you might take pdr's advice, " If you don't know, use mediainfo view=>text " and post what MediaInfo has to say about it.
