    Hi All,
I'm trying different things to produce video files without noticeable degradation from de-interlacing.
Years ago I used GordianKnot and Xvid to do conversions but trying that now I end up with VirtualDubMod hanging with "livelock". I can't see any later versions of VDM so I guess that's not an option.

I have VideoRedo TVS 5 and Myffmpeg but struggle to find any documentation around the de-interlacing options.

    Any suggestions?

    cheers

  2. If it livelocks at the very end and the video reencode is complete, can't you mux the audio and video together yourself?

I'd look into a newer converter like VidCoder.
It has Denterlace, Detelecine and Decomb settings. I set Detelecine and Decomb on by default and leave Deinterlacing off.

    And welcome to our forums.

Thanks for the replies. This forum looks like a great resource.

Unfortunately it livelocks at start, just hangs at a few percent and CPU runs at 100%.

I'll have a look at VidCoder, thanks for the direction.

  5. I'm not sure what you want to convert to but if it's Xvid/AVI you could use XMedia Recode (Vidcoder can't convert to this)

Under Format select DVD Player Standalone -> DVD Player AVI. On the Filters/Preview tab under Deinterlace Filter select Yadif.

  6. You can try https://sourceforge.net/projects/vdfiltermod/

ffmpeg is equipped in yadif which provide relatively good results without almost any speed penalty, there is also nnedi in ffmpeg - in theory one of best free deinterlacers https://ffmpeg.org/ffmpeg-filters.html#nnedi

Not too concerned about target file format as long as it is supported by the major players.

Am running some trials with VidCoder atm, Decomb with various output file sizes.

Thanks Pandy, I'll have a look at those links.

I don't deinterlace, but if you want to try it, VideoReDo's deinterlace settings are available if you click on "Save As", then click on "Profile Options" in the dialog window. The documentation found under Help has information related to deinterlace settings for DVD, but the almost certainly apply to other profiles where the option exists. Here they are:

Deinterlace mode: Your source may be recorded in interlaced or progressive format. This option controls whether to convert interlaced to progressive frames before resizing and recoding or not. Interlacing affects the resizing logic in VideoReDo. For standard definition material interlaced material, if cropping or resizing, each field is indecently resized. High definition video is always deinterlaced before resizing. Deinterlacing, by definition, causes some loss of detail and resolution. The following options are available:

    Option Behavior
Auto -- Let VideoReDo determine whether or not to deinterlace and the best deinterlacing method.

    None- Disable deinterlacing.

BOB Use the BOB method. In the BOB method picture data from one field is copied to the other field. This is often the best method for video of fast moving scenes. BOB is the fastest deinterlacing method.

Weave-Use data from both fields to create a progressive frame. Weave tends creates frames of higher resolution than BOB but does not work well with fast moving scenes.

Smart-The smart deinterlace analyzes blocks of pixels in each frame and attempt to determine which interlacing method (BOB or Weave) will yield the best picture. This method can add significantly to the recoding time.
Other deinterlace options, possibly better, exist with other programs.

Something to be aware of: Some hardware-based video players do not like variable frame rate video. Handbrake (and maybe Vidcoder) will create variable frame rate video by default, so you must to turn off variable frame rate if you want constant frame rate video. Using the Decomb filter in Handbrake and Vidcoder also creates output with variable frame rate.
