  1. I used to happily use MKVToolNix with the MKVExtractGUI. The new, gMKVExtractGUI x64 v1.8.0, IMHO, is a real pain, extracting the video file as an "und" (undetemined) file and the video codec name as the file extension, which is not supported for remuxing, even if I change the file extension to *.mkv. Moreover, files extracted with MKVCleaver are not recognized by other apps either, like AVIDemux. It seems that the new GUIs for MKVToolNix have gone down the drain, and mkv files remain a challenge to developers. Is there a demuxer/muxer for MKV files that works and is user friendly?

Replacement for MKVtoolnix, OR for the MKVextract GUIs

MKVExtractGUI is obsolete. gMKVExtractGUI is up-to-date.

I have never used them though. If you desperately need a GUI for demuxing Matroska files, give a try to TSmuxer. OR to MKVExtractGUI-2...

But the command-line applications mkvinfo and mkvextract are not very-difficult, really.
ffmpeg can do the trick as well.

  3. Demuxing a video stream gives you an elementary stream, exactly what a demuxer is supposed to to. You shouldn't change the extension, because the files aren't MKV files. If you want the stream in an MKV file use mkvtoolnixgui, deselect all the tracks you don't want, then mux.

  4. My project is to demux an MKV file, lengthen the audio stream to correct audio drift, and then remux. The reason I tried changing the file extension after demuxing is because neither gMKVExtractGUI nor MKVCleaver are capable of multiplexing. So I tried to mux the two, using AVIdemux, which did not recognize the undefined video file.

Jagabo, take a look at MKVExtractGUI: if it has somewhere to click to mux streams, it is well hidden. I don't suffer lack of logic very well. I looked carefully, but if I missed where MKVExtractGUI can mux files, please show me where or how. In the meantime I'll give TSMuxer a try.

It is a demuxer, not a muxer. Use mkvtoolnix-gui to mux.

  6. Thank you soooo much. That worked. I was under the impression that a GUI for MKVToolNix was not included in the download, since I had to download a demuxer for the tool. Thanks for lending a hand. In the meantime I was able to complete my project, using AVIdemux.
