  1. SVHS JVC SRv10U, Canopus ADVC-100 to 1394 Firewire...Best Captrue Settings?

Just wondering how to get best quality to do this, Step by Step...Any help would be appreciated.

    Capture? Windv? Virtual Dub? Settings?
    Encode? huffyuv, TMPGenc? Settings?
Editing software? Magix Pro, Unlead Video? Settings?

    Sorry, new at this...Thank you!

P.S. Best quality meaning clearest, cleanest Picture...

  2. Capture - WinDV is very good. Scenalyzer is also now freeware, and offers more bells and whistles which you might find useful . Both will give you the same output file quality. The conversion to DV is done in the Canopus ADVC100, and the Firewire simply transfers the output of that unit to the computer. There's no quality loss at all.

Encode - It's unusual to find very many people wanting to keep their converted VHS tapes as DVDs these days. Much more common to hear of folk keeping the files in the mp4 format. That's suitable for replay using computer software players and external media players or using the USB inputs on TV sets and PVRs. If you do choose that route, simply import your captured DV files into Virtualdub, edit the footage there and export using the vfw X.264 codec, with the default settings. Virtualdub only exports directly using the .avi format, so you would need to convert that file to an mp4 for better compatibility. Without encoding the video again, free programs like MKV2MP4 work well for that sort of task.

If you do want to stick with converting to DVD there is plenty of expertise on the board here to advise you on the best way to do that. I haven't done that for over 5 yeas now, and back then I found TMPGenc to be very good....

I still use WinDV for transferring the DV file from my ADVC 100 to the computer. Since it's just a data transfer, there are no quality settings.
If you go to their site, http://windv.mourek.cz/ and scroll down a bit, there is an interactive shot of the software that explains each setting.

I edit the DV file, then usually convert it to the desired final format with VirtualDub most times. If I want to save it for further edits, I use the Cedocida DV Codec.

But other members may have better suggestions.

Are there any capture cards that have a Y/C input (S-Video) since that is probably a bottleneck using conventional composite?
Why are ones and zeros so complicated? Linear Video Editing was easier. Downloading & streaming are two different things.

You might look into these companies.

    They aren't cheap.

I'm assuming you have a Svideo source such as a VHS deck. Svideo is a bit old these days. The old ADVC cards have Svideo inputs also.
