I'm looking simply, as the title suggests, for some free animation software, preferably with both the ability to draw within it, and to import images.
Preferably with an as simple learning curve as possible, I don't really need tonnes of features, just some stuff for nice, simple animations which I'll put on YouTube.
Oh and I'll emphasize, free, not just cheap, but free! I'm a secondary school student! I have a lot of other things to spend money on too!
BTW, I've not done much animating before, this is a fairly new field for me, so if you throw some real technical jargon, I may well have no idea what your talking about.

For classical animation Pencil2D and for stop motion qstopmotion or MonkeyJam.
There is plenty of videos about Pencil2D on net. Probably best free and opensource animation software.

Do you happen to know any of the best Pencil2D tutorials to get started on?
I've just downloaded it, and will have a little prod around soon.

  7. Quite popular is http://www.synfig.org/cms/

I like old but still gold TVPaint - free version for Amiga (you can run Amiga emulator WinUAE on PC) can be downloaded from http://www.tvpaint.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=11 .
PC version is somehow expensive but it is quite powerful ( http://www.tvpaint.com/v2/content/article/community/gallery.php ) tool http://www.tvpaint.com/v2/content/article/home/ .
