Re-coloring old back-and-white images and film has been an art done by hand.... Until now.
(It is still far from perfect, but already amazing)
A team in Wasada University(Japan) published a technical document, a code sample and "mecab" made a Web service (see post #26), showing how is it possible to turn a grey scale image into full color.
The Web service:
http://colorize.dev.kaisou.misosi.ru/ (Japanese UI)
http://colorize.dev.kaisou.misosi.ru/?lang=en (English UI)
Instruction:
1. Click on the big blue button and choose a file
2. Click on the right blue button
3. Wait
Demo Video: (Attached MP4)
Restriction:
Source Filesize: <8MB
Dimension: longest side <800px
// For the developers and I.T. postgrad and alike
The blog about the web services (Japanese):

The paper/source code (English):

Grey scale to color is simple ... black and white is more technical -
I think if is it color to grey scale and back to color it isnt such new.
Dads army how to from greyscale to Color Dad's army shooted in color recorded in BW and restored to color. At least it is interesting.
But It will be different technique I bet.
Bernix -
The Japanese technique is way more sophisticated than the color-dot method used on old telecines. It employs AI neural networks.
-
It's different from the chroma-dot technique. For chroma-dot technique to work, the original film must contains traces of color info already.
The AI-technique essentially generate the new color info from scratch... as you can try it yourself using true digital greyscale image.
B/W and Greyscale... umm, these terms are annoying. In daily life, layman use B/W to refer to both Binary Image and Greyscale, many printer driver use the same convention... it seems only those of use familiar with computer graphics would use the term "greyscale"Stopping development until someone save me from poverty or get me out of Hong Kong...

This is pretty fun to play around with. I tried a b/w shot and not greyscale from the original Godzilla 1954. It gave me this kind of neat result
[Attachment 37353 - Click to enlarge]
Also tried another b/w from the film Them. This does not do a bad job at all
[Attachment 37354 - Click to enlarge] -
Not bad considering that neither Godzilla nor giant ants are likely in the training database.
-
I'll grant that the software's ability to assign colors is impressive. But it's nowhere near being useful for anything.
-
Guys accordingly to paper grayscale image should be 224x224 - color map from low res video may be later up-sized and applied to original hires version.
-
Did not do a bad job from the original Psycho either. I know I am not using this for its intended purpose, but still a blast to play around with. I like the (as I tend to call it) "electricfied colors" it gives. Sort of reminds me of The software from blackmagic though in that case you do the coloring for the most part

And another Godzilla 54

nice to see mixed response,
then perhaps no one will ask for a plugin or something like that of waifu2x...Stopping development until someone save me from poverty or get me out of Hong Kong...

Tried waifu2x and it is Great, thank you!
I also would like to see it as standalone or anything.
Great things.Last edited by Bernix; 12th Jun 2016 at 00:27.

It is already quite well on natural images, for "weird" images it need more training and higher complexity but even now results are impressive - i made some tests - except obvious fail rest is OK IMHO.

Interesting effect on my original B/W photo of my old dragbike. It actually makes the photo look older.

Hi,
I'm the creator of the web service, and I found here via the Referer of browsers.
I'm happy to see people here are using it. Thank you!
It motivate me to add English pages on the site. I think it now should looks familiar for you, while the quality of the lines are not good (corrections welcomed).

As pandy mentioned, we could create 224x224 color map then rescale so that improve the processing speed. Unfortunately the released code have not seemed to implement it. That's why I've limited the output resolution. Although I'm going to try to implement it in the future, please use Waifu2x or something to get higher resolution.
Well, one correction is:
> A team in Wasada University(Japan) published a technical document, a code sample and a Web service
I'm not a member of the geniuses team, but a tiny web developer and just running their code -
Nice! Glad you find your way here
Can you please clarify which site(s) are owned by you and which is run by the university team?
Is the domain *.misosi.ru run by you, while
http://hi.cs.waseda.ac.jp/~iizuka/projects/colorization/en/
is really owned by that team?Stopping development until someone save me from poverty or get me out of Hong Kong...
