Interesting that only the 1080p version gets messed up . One of the lower bitrate 720p versions was 30p and ok
youtube-dl is one way to access all the different versions
But the "best" version is 25p "hls-amazon-6006-2" - which was the one I checked out earlier with the dropped frames
"http-amazon-High mp4 1280x720 2128k , h264@2000k, aac @128k" was 30p and ok
You can check one of the lower bitrate 1080p versions , or maybe one of the other 6K bitrate versions @1080p, or maybe higher bitrate 720p versions. Or maybe it's the http versions that are ok, and the hls versions messed up. I don't really care for checking them all out , but interesting to know. I had assumed that they would all get the same processing

Very cool. Thank you so much!!! And these were all from youtube-dl? I've never used it. I always use masstube
-
The only link I saw was a link to the vevo page.
I just right clicked on the video and selected "Save Video As". Or "Copy video URL".
[Attachment 40359 - Click to enlarge]
I saw no 1080p version. -
What browser are you playing back in?? Firefox and chrome don't give me the option to save the video.
And, also, youtube-dl doesn't help me in the least, unfortunately. I know nothing about command line programs and the only GUI for it doesn't give you all those options that poisondeathray mentionedBack to square one...

Well IDM can access several versions, it's easy to use (push a button), but it's not free
There are several youtube-dl GUI's , it might be worth looking at some others .
Or bite the bullet and start learning about command line . It's really not that difficult for basic usage. Now is a good time to learn , with all the youtube changes (VP9, opus) and version types - you have full control of what audio or video streams you select. youtube-dl gets updated very frequently to reflect changes in various websites (it downloads from many sites, not just youtube). Sometimes there are big changes, and that will break a front end for it. You might have to wait a few days or even weeks for a GUI to get patched, but the CLI usually gets patched the same day. Also other commonly used programs like x264 , x265, ffmpeg - also require CLI usage to harness the full potential as well -
you seriously downloaded and checked 30 versions with idm (!) ??
which windows version are you on ?
You just open a command prompt . While you are in a given directory in windows explorer, Hold shift key and right click => open command window here
enter youtube-dl -F [address] to get the printout similar to the one posted above
This was the exact command
Code:youtube-dl -F http://www.vevo.com/watch/billy-joel/All-About-Soul/USSM20402900
So for example , when I tested the 720p low bitrate version (ie. http-amazon-High), I used
Code:youtube-dl -f http-amazon-High http://www.vevo.com/watch/billy-joel/All-About-Soul/USSM20402900 -o 720p_amazon.mp4
-o specifies the output filename and path. Since I didn't specify a path, it uses same directory where I opened the command prompt
But the exe has to be specified in the path - If you use it frequently some people set up an environment variable, so you can call it from anywhere. That's the way I do it with various commonly used exe's like ffmpeg . There are plenty of step by step tutorials with screenshots for setting up environment variables, so take a quick peek on google . Or you can just manually specify the location. For example if youtube-dl.exe was in c:\folder
Code:"c:\folder\youtube-dl" -F http://www.vevo.com/watch/billy-joel/All-About-Soul/USSM20402900

It took no time. You can download all at once. Then I checked the FPS in windows explorer. Almost all said 25fps, aside from a few of the lower resolutions that had 15 and 10, I believe.

My mind sorta exploded reading all that. I'll give it a try and see how I fare. Thanks for the info. -
So I have to thank you because, as you said, I bit the bullet and figured out youtube-dl. You're right. On all the videos that i checked, all of the "amazon-high" videos were 720p and were 30fps. Unfortunately, that fit for all videos, even those that are 23.976. And there was also much more compression on the 720p files than the 1080p. So that completely throws out the idea that these files are upscaled from 480p (or whatever resolution).
I really don't get what master they have over there.I'm still having to use the tdecimate for the best quality but that's not possible for the files that are 29.98.

Yes, the 1080p image quality is still better here. The 720p is encoded with poor settings and relatively lower proportional bitrate . But for this specific case, the frame drops are far worse IMO. I suppose one method to improve it might be to insert the missing frames back into the 1080p version , derived from the 720p version
For the 99% of other cases (ie. "regular" music videos) , the native frame rate is "24p" . And choosing the 1080p25 version is usually the best choice, then using one of the decimation methods earlier in this thread.
