    Hi all

I'm going to rip a cartoon DVD and wanted to know what the best format / compression is to do this with and what to use (I'm using a mac but I have a PC as well)

I've used Xilisoft to rip a 11min show at an output size of 200mb (H264-MPEG4-AVC) ... I think 200mb for 11min is a bit excessive.

Can anyone give me some tips please ?

    Thanks

  2. Post MediaInfo for the file.

    Use VidCoder (or HandBrake) instead.

    Why?

Regardless, in VidCoder, under the Video tab, you should be able to select the target size manually to what you think it needs to (or want it to) be.
There's probably a similar setting in HandBrake.

  7. You can convert this to H.264, ffmpeg can be used for this.

Assuming that this is real cartoon perhaps some preprocessing can be applied to improve overall compressibility and at the same also improve quality.

    Code:
file size = bitrate * running time
So select a lower bitrate or use a higher RF value. But my guess is the video has a lot of noise that requires either a high bitrate or a lot of noise reduction before it will compress well.

Have you some special reason for CABAC = no ? It saves lots of space.

  10. Yes, and use a higher preset, profile, and level -- unless you have some specific playback limitation.

If I were you I should use vidcoder instead of handbrake. In video advanced tab you can easy control parameters. In Handbrake is default settings really horrible.

There is better setting. From Vidcoder
    Advanced setting tab Vidcoder
    And use constant frame rate.

And they are suboptimal - ref=1 only when level is capable easily 4 and overall quality can be beneficial from this especially in cartoon...

    I know. I always use lots of P-frames (8-(16->this for animation))and max 3 b-frames.
