  5. I have just done a test on a short mini cam clip its just a test but it says the video is jpeg yet the file says .avi

    also how can you change the resolution

  6. The container is AVI.

    In the container is a video using MJPG codec together with an audio with PCM.

    To change the resolution you'll need to re-encode however most players (& TV) can upscale it. (and your cam may have other settings with different resolution)

    AVI is just a type of container used to hold video and audio. Most people associate DivX or XVid with AVI, but AVI is compatible with many other types of video and audio, including MJPEG video and PCM audio, as shown for your file.

    To change the resolution you would need to re-encode the video to the desired resolution. Cropping or padding may be necessary if the current aspect ratio is correct, but you want the resulting video to have a different aspect ratio.

    ok but if i play this short clip in videolan the quality is terrible but if I play it in windows media player its much better so why when using videolan the quality is rubbish

    Don't know for certain since we don't really know your file nor your installed system. But in general, the difference comes down to playback architecture & codec settings. Vlc uses its own set of portable decoders & demuxers, wmp uses existing installed OS/system Directshow decoders & demuxers. Often vlc has better performance than wmp but of course YMMV.
