I just can't believe how counterintuitive these video editing programs are, when it comes to something as simple as deleting a section of the video.

I'm trying to cut some advertisements out of an MPEG video using Mpg2Cut2. I can easily see how to mark the beginning and end of the section I want to delete, but, I cannot see a 'delete' submenu option under any of the menu options, particularly, the 'Edit' menu option.

Would someone please either explain to me how to do this, or point me in the direction of a guide?

You could select the parts you want to keep with [ and ].
    Click on the + button.
Last File->Save All Clips and you will get one mpg.

As I don't think you can delete clips.

Or use avidemux, open mpg, under video and audio choose copy, set start and stop for clips you want to remove, press delete on your keyboard and last save as format: mpg(mpeg-ps).

Or you could try a better tool for cutting mpeg. VideoReDo is not free, but there is a fully functional trial available. I've always found it easy to use.

MPEG-VCR is a lower-cost ($19) alternative to VideoReDo if someone only needs to cut MPEG-2. Use the free trial to see if you like it before buying.

However, I would suggest trying VideoReDo or TS-Doctor instead to someone who is cutting recorded TV files originating from a TV tuner card as those often contain transmission errors that other editors cannot handle.

Just for the record, two other very nice MPEG-2 edit programs are: Womble MPEG Video Wizard DvD (the "big brother" of the mentioned MPEG-VCR) and TMPGEnc MPEG Smart Renderer.

Like the mentioned VideoReDo, they are very easy to use, and only re-encode just a few frames at the cuts (and joins) saving tons of time and quality in processing.

Also, like VideoReDo, they are not free. If it's an isolated project you're working on right now, I say go ahead with Baldrick's advice, but if you are planning to do lots of work with MPEG-2, these I highly recommend for looking into as a worthwhile investment in productivity.
I hate VHS. I always did.
