I sometimes edit the audio of an mp4/avi by opening the video with WavePad, making my changes to the audio, then saving a new mp3 file. Avidemux is then used to put the new audio on to the video but, very often, there's a burst of static at the start. I've no idea why that should be, it seems to depend on where you cut the video originally.
It was suggested to me that I save a wav file rather than an mp3 and let avidemux do the conversion to mp3. This plan works insofar as the 'static' problem doesn't arise but I now have another problem as shown in the attachments. Can anyone suggest why the volume is being lowered and how to prevent this? Thank you for your time.

mp4/avi? Do you mean divx/xvid or H264 ? NO need to be coy, the more details the better.
Why don't you use Virtualdub to add the new audio to the avi ? -
Make sure you don't have the audio filters set set change the volume. For example, make sure Gain Mode is set to None.
