  1. I have an avi and an identically named srt file in the same folder, but when I open AviAddXSubs, select the avi, and click Start, all I get is, "Failed, video stream not found." What's wrong with the damn thing?

AFAIK it suports only xvid and divx. Your video is H264.
AVIAddXSubs is a simple free program to incorporate subtitles from .srt (ANSI text, up to 2 srt) or idx/sub (containing up to 8 subtitles) quickly and easily to your avi files containing DivX/XVid video streams.
You can try to remux your video in MkvtoolnixGUI and insert subtitles to container. So you will have one file with subtitles inside.

Great, thanks for the advice. I'll try reencoding the video with DivX and see whether I can get AviAddXSubs to work then.

  6. Well I reencoded with Xvid and AviAddXSubs worked fine. It created a .divx copy of the video. But I couldn't get the subtitles to work. What did I do wrong?

You didn't follow Bernix advice, just use mkvmerge to add the srt and video and mux,no need to re-encode and further reduce quality.

mkvs only work on ps3s if you're using ps3 media server. That's too complicated for me and I'm not interested in streaming anyway. I just wanna be able to plug a usb drive into the ps3 and play videos that way. In order to be able to do that with videos with external subtitles, I need to know how to use AviAddXSubs properly.

You will have to re-encode with vidcoder, choose normal profile and where it says subtitles click on edit and import the srt and choose to burn in since ps3 won't plays subs from a mp4.

Thanks. I have read that and unfortunately, for reasons I cannot figure out, the ps3 won't detect the video. That instruction guide said once you've created the video, put it on a usb drive and plug it into the ps3. I did that and the ps3 detected the usb drive but couldn't find the video on it. I was definitely in the video column of the ps3 menu but it said no titles found.

I tried vidcoder before, and handbrake. Unfortunately, they both create files that are way too large. The only way I can think of of reducing the file size is by skimping on quality.

It's .divx That's the extension of the file AviAddXSubs creates. Should I just try changing it to .avi? That guide you posted said nothing about that. It just said copy the video to a usb drive.

To play the video on a ps3 don''t click on the usb icon right away, click on the green triangle on your ps3 remote control and select Display All and then you will see your video,as to encoding with handbrake or vidcoder you need to set the bitrate or otherwise you get big files.

Choose constant quality 20 and it will you a smaller file size.

YES! Thank you! That did it! I could see the video, I could play the video, I could select the subtitles, and the subtitles showed. Exactly what I wanted. Thanks again.
