I have acquired a few WMV files over the years in anticipation that one day I might be able to do something with them. I usually avoid WMV like the plague because they're generally worse quality than anything else and they're totally incompatible with every hardware-based piece of equipment I have for playing them.

That said, I see an opportunity now to convert them to MP4 format using Handbrake so I can at last watch them in comfort (ie, not perched at my computer). A problem arises though with many of them where I'm assuming they have bad frames or are otherwise slightly corrupted somehow such that Handbrake has difficulty decoding them. There is no evidence of this in playing them in MPC-HC on the computer, but when trying to convert them, handbrake will give up and quit them mid-encode with no error message at all. It's as if handbrake just thinks it's come to the end of the file and finishes normally.

Is there any software that can scan WMV files and report bad frames or other non-compliant stream errors and perhaps cut out those bad sections? Kind of like VirtualDub error mode, but I've tried that and it finds nothing wrong.

You can try asfbinwin, add the wmvs (by select them and click on the <<<) and then just try output as new wmvs (click on Cut/Copy/Join).

Maybe the problem is in Handbrake. You can use Shotcut to convert wmv files to mp4 (x264) or any other container/format. It is not its main purpose but it works well as a converter too. If it plays well in videoplayer, I think there could be problem in handbrake.
    But Iam a noob.

Yep. It's always good to try another converter. Like Xmedia Recode or even VLC Media Player(under Media->Convert/Stream)

AsfbinWin didn't work, but thanks for the suggestion. Handbrake just exited at the same point with the resultant ASF as it did with the original WMV. I'm trying ShotCut now instead.

Edit: Unfortunately Shotcut is complete unfinished rubbish that just crashes constantly while running and even when trying to install it or reinstall it or even remove it. It's almost worse than a virus!

  6. You could also try a Repair with AsfTools or remux with MKVToolnix.

    MKVToolnix doesn't support ASF/WMV containers

Sorry then. For me it works without any problem. If only you could upload your broken wmv. I have similar problem with other software but not with this one.

My mistake. I actually succesfully used:

    ffmpeg -i Video.wmv -c copy Video.mkv

for a wmv made in Windows Movie Maker.

All AsfTool repairs made no difference at all to Handbrake's handling of the file however XMediaRecode seems to be able to encode without aborting midway so far. Thanks for the suggestions. I shall just use XMediaRecode on problematic files instead of Handbrake.
