I was just doing a bit of research on solid-state drives and stumbled across this (I'm not actually thinking about purchasing either of these).

Other than the price and the picture shown, what is the difference between these 2 drives? The description looks the same in each...

The Lenovo 0NC660 SSD is probably older. A source for the Lenovo 0NC660 SSD in the USA says it has been phased out.

Perhaps the Lenovo 00MJ158 SSD could be substituted for the Lenovo 0NC660 SSD, but I would check with Lenovo first. I don't know what Lenovo does, but some computer makers white-list certain parts and prevent anything not on the list from working. I would not expect that to be true for an SSD, but given the cost of this item, I would make sure first.

Ok I see, but why would they make a newer drive with exactly the same specifications? (I'm not saying you're wrong, just curious)

It just seems like a crazy increase in price for something that is exactly the same as the one before it...

The two drives are slightly different in some way that doesn't show up in the specs, like possibly they were made for Lenovo by different companies, or use different components.

Crazy price increases are not unusual when computer parts are discontinued.

Ok, I just realised that I read your first answer wrong. When you said that the 0NC660 was older, I assumed that was the cheaper one, but it was in fact the more expensive one, so the price has actually dropped by more than $10,000.

If the 0NC660 has been discontinued then I guess it should be removed from their website.

Anyway, thanks for answering my question

The other factor that might come into play is that flash memory prices have dropped over time, although in this case I think scarcity of the older part is the biggest reason for its high price.

I use a few online stores that still have listings for items which they no longer sell. Sometimes Google returns the listing for a discontinued item when it isn't possible to find those pages using the website itself.
