I want to use 3 cameras to video a school event and upload the performance real time to the web. I need some kind of hardware - maybe this switch - to do it, and then some software as well so that I can fade from one to the other - create smooth transitions. Will this do the trick?

That switch will provide you with 3 inputs and one output.

But you can not directly connect a hdmi output to a computer. You will also need a capture card that has a hdmi input.

Then you need the streaming software to capture/encode/broadcast. This may do the biz.

You probably won't get seamless switching with that device. Every time you switch from one camera to another you'll probably get a loss of signal fora second or so.

with what you are proposing those cameras will not be in sync (frame wise)
everytime you switch, the capture device will have to re-aquire the signal from that camera
it is NOT going to be fluid or seamless
