    Hello

I'm trying to convert some DVD to .MKV files using TMPGENC VMW5.

Source is widescreen (16:9, 1:78:1) which is full screen.

I'm encoding using aspect 16:9, 720x480. BUT each time, I'm getting little tiny black bar at the top/bottom of the screen. I tried Handbrake with the same setting without any problem and I'm getting a real full screen picture.

Anyone knows how to make a perfect rip with TMPGENC VMW5 ?

    Thanks everyone

Can't you crop the video in tmpgenc? Search the manual/help.

Handbrake is probably using the auto crop feature.

Or use MakeMKV if you don't need to shrink the dvd.

    Thanks baldrick for your help.

I can't crop them because the original source is full screen (and exactly what it's suppose to be), those little tiny bars at the top/bottom appear only during the making of the MKV file. (also if this can help, when I watch the .mkv using VCL they only appear when I'm full screen)

    any idea ?

  4. 1) Are you certain your original source isn't a 1.85:1 movie? That would produce the results you describe.

    2) In the TMPGenc resize filter choose: Full Screen (No Margin) and uncheck the keep aspect ratio box.
If you get the same results, see 1).

    I'm getting the same result.

when I play the dvd on the TV, the screen is full, 1:78.

    here is the Clip Properties.

    Interlace/Top Field First
Aspect Ratio: Pixel 40:33 (NTSC 16:9)

    Filter / Resize

Full Screen (No Margin) and keep aspect ratio unchecked

    Setting for the MKV

    Stream Video: MPEG-4 AVC
    Video Encoder: x264
    Profile Level High 4.1
    Size: 720x480
    Aspect Ratio: Displey 16:9
    Frame rate 29,97 ftp
    Displey Mode: Interlace

    Maybe that can help

    Thanks

That could be easily explained by the television's overscan. How about a sample cut from the DVD and not reencoded? 10 seconds will be plenty.

You can use DGIndex, among other programs. Use the [ and ] buttons to isolate a small piece and then File->Save Project and Demux Video. Upload the resulting M2V file.

Ok, I've run lot of test this after noon and I've located the problem but not fixed it. When I select the aspect ratio aspect of the .mkv it should be at 720x480.

    At 720x480 = I've those tiny bars top/bottom.
At 716x480 = The Picture is correct no bar
At 720x478 = The Picture is correct no bar

I've tried this with 1:78 and 1:33 dvds. Always the same problem.

    Any solutions ?

As always, Thanks for your help gentlemen
