I am making screen capture videos using active presenter. I export to MKV (that's the best quality it has) and then I use AVIUTL to edit, add music, text, etc.

My question is, when I am done editing my video, what is the best quality format to export to? Or maybe I should ask, what are some of the best lossless export formats in relation to a manageable size?

What is your goal with the video? Is it the final format? Then use h264 in mp4/mkv.

yes it is the final video. it will then be uploaded to youtube.

when I render it with AVIUTL, should I save as an avi or should I save with plugins? Don't I need to have h246 installed somewhere on my computer?

Youtube will reconvert the video. So you can export as avi with a lossless codec(huffyuv, lagarith)...but it's probably too big so you can then use xvid with very high bitrate.

x264 and x265 encoders should be included in the "3rd Party" folder within Aviutl. I would export with x264 via Export with plugins. Quality will be very good at a small filesize.
Got my retirement plans all set. Looks like I only have to work another 5 years after I die........
