Hi,
sit back and relax and watch full screen video with a control bar along base with everything I need and a timeline that can be dragged and a fine control for such. , no massive interfaces messing up my viewing. frame by frame back and forth and stills capture.
Used to use Windvd4 which had frame fwd and backward control and stills capture, great prog, adjust speed, joggle control, its been ruined since, stills capture lost, hate thre people who messed it up. I need something for win7 with ability to joggle fwd AND BACKWARDS and capture stills.
MPC can't capture same aspect ratio, it makes capture of 16:9 sort of 4:3 and circles are vertical elipses,..crap. damn shame but why alter shape of captures ?
Jaksta has no frame by frame backward controls, and a clumsy shift S for capture.
FV media player sounded brilliant but its unavailable now. Its as if such controls are doomed to death.
What is there that will play mp4 mpeg etc, capture same shape as viewed, and quality ! and give fwd AND backward frame control ?
Surely there is something in this day and age ?

No, and it's not a trivial thing to create.
Particularly with the ascendance of Long, Open-GOP, multi-referenced frame structures. That means, to do it properly with all the effects possibilities and still have smooth performance, you'd need to load & cache at least 3 whole GOP's worth of frames (current, previous, next). Could be scores or even hundreds of frames. In real time. Much more complicated, much more RAM used, and faster algorithms necessary.
Also, capturing has very little to do with extended transport controls (not counting tape-based hardware manipulation): Capture is a smooth, linear, real-time workflow.
Frame (Stills) capturing is another matter altogether, which may or may not be tied to video capture.

The needs of consumer playback are usually quite different than the needs of producers & editors. What you are talking about has more to do with production/edition, than it does with "trick" playback.
But, you might still be surprised - if you get something like a "Contour ShuttlePro" USB jog/shuttle wheel control, you might still be able to do some of those things you're seeking (if it supports or can be linked to support your app of choice).

Potplayer allows this. Press D to go back one frame, and F to go forward one frame. Press Ctrl+E to save source frame, and Ctrl+Alt+E to save frame as displayed i.e. if you're watching a 640x360 video in a window of double size, then the former saves a 640x360 image, and the latter a 1280x720 image - BMP, JPG or PNG. Pressing Tab brings up a readout with current frame index (and timecode). The seek bar can also show thumbnails as you hover on it.
It supports skins and you can probably find (or make/modify) a skin to have the above functions as buttons. You can also remap the keyboard shortcuts for these functions. -
Hi,
mulvya...thats fantastic, and it works, backwards frame by frame,
file navigation bit odd , 4 times clicked on my H drive yet got C drive, could do with modified date column to put most recent at top.
Right click video aspect 4:3 as it was playing a 4:3 at 16:9 did a stills capture, open into photoshop and it was 16:9 so had to go view and pixel aspect ratio and set it to square. saved it and opened it and was now 4:3
to do that for every still I make, and I make hundreds is a real pain. They will all display stretched in my image viewer BreezeBrowser otherwise.
Any idea how I get it to save as 4:3 shape a 4:3 video and play a 4:3 at 4:3 shape without having to force it to ?
Also Ctrl D and Ctrl Alt E is v awkward for a sudden stills capture, strange they dont use a single key hit, hope to give it a single keyboard key if possible, any ideas ?

In the Aspect Ratio menu, select Keep Aspect Ratio at the top and Default Display AR in the middle. Below that, select Adjust AR to Window Size.
In the Preferences menu, Playback section, set Default Window Size to Video output size.
In The General, Keyboard section assign 'Video->Video Capture->Save Current Source Frame' to V.
That should get you going. -
Hi,
many thanks...
made the settings in your first two lines of advice., most of which were already set as such,
sussed the keyboard shortcut, need to use add.
I find D doesnt go backwards when playing a dvd, I can but think thats because dvd's are designed to go forwards, maybe get it onto HDD, not sure , never done that, assume copy files into a folder ? cant drag backwards springs fwds, unless go backwards quite a bit.
turned on shuffle but not sure what shuffle controls are. I dont see any.
Lot of settings, so much to remember, wish for a shuttle back forth slider, as the timeline is too vast for fine work. if D worked it wouldnt be a problem. maybe there is no easy backwards with a dvd.
Stills capture is giving me a lot of unwanted text and numbers, I cant see where to alter this, where can I alter what it puts into a file name ? i just want cap001.jpg then I can add footage name or other text myself.
Cheers

You can toggle between system date or timecode in filename. Go to Video -> Video Capture and look at bottom choices to toggle between those. Don't know if it's more customizable than that.

Hi,
Thats in right click>Video>Video Capture,
I selected the lower one and it uses the entire video title then sticks _20160405_182117.525.jpg on the end, but the file has a windows date anyway.
To then add to that the actual subject matter captures makes for a massive file name.
I closed it down then relaunched it and this time got VR_MOVIE.VRO_003653.043.jpg so changes dont take effect without a relaunch.
Somewhat better, other progs just have cap001.bmp etc but its somewhat better., thanks.
Big problem though, I cannot get it to go backwards, playing a DVD_RTAV video file from the hard drive, D doesnt frame by frame backwards, doesnt go backwards much at all, so its not an optical drive limitation. Only seems to work with mp4 videos.
This a real shame as I needed frame backwards on all videos.
