  1. I just picked one up and I just want to test it out first by recording my PC screen for just a few seconds.

I have it plugged in, with a USB cord connected to the front of the computer and an HDMI cable connected to the monitor. I hit the red button to record and nothing happens. The device is blinking blue, which means no video.

Is this a connection problem, do I need to the connect the HDMI cable to the back of the PC rather than the monitor?

  2. HDMI cable connected to the monitor? Shouldn't the HDMI cable connect to the computer? That's where the picture is coming from. Or does your monitor have HDMI passthrough?

Yes. Connect HDMI out from the PC to the Rocket's HDMI in. (The PC must also be set up to use HDMI for output.) Connect the Rocket's HDMI out to a monitor or TV so you can see what you are recording.
