i tried to use ccextractor on "video_ts" folder of a dvd movie. the logfile seems to process things, but it won't save a SRT file or any other file to the desktop or output/input folders. i know this dvd has CC as it has no subtitles. The creator mentioned to process the vob files. Does that mean convert them to avi/mpg? I tried that but when I used CCEX on the video, the srt file was empty, zero value.

Did you try open the first 1GB vob file(usually VTS_01_1.VOB) in ccextractor?
You can also use vob2mpg to extract the vobs to a single mpg. No video reconversion. -
This is CCExtractor tutorials: http://www.ccextractor.org/dvd-cc-extraction.html
But first check if you have option to extract subtitles
drag and drop biggest VOB file to Mediainfo:

If you see RLE text stream its sub/idx
EIA-608 its closed captions(CC) subtitles
CCExtractor can extract only closed captions subtitles -
Thanks Baldrick. I ended up doing 1 vob file at a time to get 3 cc files. how do i combine them?

You can load all vob files at once in ccextractor. See http://www.ccextractor.org/dvd-cc-extraction.html . Scroll down to the bottom.
And export as srt. -
If you open movie file in MediaInfo program
and you don't see any text streams
so you cannot extract if the movie has no subtitles
If movie have text streams
you can extract with Subtitle Edit
text streams in MediaInfo look like this:
-
CCExtractorGUI can't create subtitles if there are no EIA-608 closed captions, EIA-708 closed captions, or teletext captions to process. It doesn't work for processing selectable DVD or Blu-ray subtitles (RLE text stream), or other forms of subtitling.
