  1. Hi, I have an .avi file I'd like to edit in Virtual Dub but keep getting the message "decompressor needed for MP 42" something I've never heard of.

    Much appreciate any help ...

    Thanks in advance

Can you post the full details from the avi. Use mediainfo, open avi, change to View->text and copy everything.

    Or edit with AviDemux.

  3. Sorry when you say "Can you post the full details from the avi." where are you referring to ? Into Mediainfo which I've downloaded ok .

I need to use VDub because of the manual frame by frame slider at the bottom...

    Thanks

Kept freezing? Did you exctract all files from https://www.videohelp.com/download/MediaInfo_GUI_0.7.82_Windows_i386_WithoutInstaller.7z with 7zip and then run mediainfo.exe. Then open your avi file. Change to view->text and ctrl-a and ctr-c(copy).

Or try https://www.videohelp.com/software/Virtualdub-AIO . It includes several video import plugins.

  6. Yes just as you said, only it couldn't find the .avi which was ready and waiting only the original MP4 file. Finally it kept freezing into an outline of a small box but with no text....?

Thanks I'll try your link next

  7. MP42 is Microsoft's old experimental Mpeg 4 Part 2 (like Divx, Xvid but not compatible) codec.

ffdshow's VfW interface contains an MP42 decoder.

  10. Thanks but I needed to use VirtualDub which has a manual frame by frame slider along the bottom using the left and right arrows on the keyboard, instead of using the mouse or at a very slow but automatic play rate....

You really have no idea of what you're trying to do

  12. VirtualDub uses VFW decoders. All you have to do install a VFW MP42 decoder and VirtualDub will be able to use it. That's why people have been giving you links to VFW MP42 codecs.

Stop guessing I'm almost there with MPC - HCx 64 but would prefer VDub....

Thanks understood, but I kept getting the same refusal as before for some reason ?

Maybe you have a 32 bit vs 64 bit problem? 64 bit VirtualDub requries 64 bit VFW codecs (of which there aren't many). 32 bit VirtualDub requires 32 bit VFW codecs.

Yes good point thanks as I've got 64 bit Win 7. I had thought of this but I'd read that using the 32 bit if possible, could avoid unnecessary problems later so preferable to use 32 bit which I finally chose.

Anyway the amazing thing is that it's suddenly started working just fine for some reason and is far, far superior to MPC and anything else by miles when using the slider actions across the bottom of the screen, as you can use the left/right arrows on the keyboard as I'd hoped. Quick single press for a single frame move, then obviously right up the scale to keeping your finger constantly down when it then runs at normal speed, so totally chuffed as I've been trying to sort this out for ages.

The only thing that's puzzling now is why it's suddenly started playing fine in MP4 which it refused to do previously ? And the reason why I'd had to convert it to .avi which I'd read somewhere was necessary to do first, yet even this wasn't being accepted either ?

Real mystery just wish I could pass on the reason why....

    Thanks again all....
