  1. Hi guys,

I'm running into a bit of an issue trying to get VirtualDub to load .MKV files that have their video encoded in HEVC.

I have the VirtualDub .mkv filter installed and it reads and loads the file, but gives a "No Video" warning on the video frames.

The only codecs I have installed on my systems is ffdshow (with VFW enabled) and XVID. (Windows 10 Pro 64-bit)

What else do I Need in order to get HEVC video into VirtualDub?

    Cheers,

    Mike.

  2. Thanks for the reply...

I already have that installed in the plugins directory, but still no joy.

  3. Did you follow the instructions?
The plugin can be used explicity by opening a file in virtualdub and selecting the plugin in the 'files of type' combobox
On virtualdubs file menu click on 'open video file'
Change the 'files of type' combo from 'all types' to 'ffmpeg supported files'
Navigate to and select your file
    Click Open
The file will be opened using the ffmpeg plugin if possible, or give an error message for unsupported file types

  4. @sneaker, You sir are a genius!

It worked - I didn't read the "files of type"...

Up until now I've been using the "free" Divx Converter,. which has been creating huge .divx files.

Now I can use good old XVID!

    Many thanks, once again!

    Cheers,

    Mike.

Another way to load content made with a High Efficiency Video Codec (please note the correct order) would be indirectly via an AviSynth or VapourSynth script using FFMS2 or L-SMASH Works as decoder.

You could also completely avoid VirtualDub; there are many converters based on ffmpeg or AviSynth (and soon VapourSynth, according to the development of Selur's Hybrid). You don't need Xvid as a VfW codec. It is also available inside ffmpeg or as a stand-alone encoder (xvid_encraw).

Thanks for the info. I find VirtualDub so easy to use and (for my needs) is an all-in-one (mostly!) solution for my simple conversion needs without the requirement to get into scripts.

Being able to encode xvid via ffmpeg would be nice. Can you recommend a good tutorial for ffmpeg?

    Cheers,

    Mike.

ffmpeg is command line program. It's very powerful and I use it quite a bit. There are GUI's for ffmpeg that you will find very easy to use. I recommend XmediaRecode. It will handle that with a breeze.
Got my retirement plans all set. Looks like I only have to work another 5 years after I die........

Other useful GUIs may be TEncoder and Selur's Hybrid. And Handbrake seems to be based on ffmpeg as well, according to what I read.
