Hello Everyone,
I have looked through numerous posts, including a few of my own.
I need to convert some camcorder ( Panasonic HC-V700 ) 1080/60psf videos that are m2ts to mp4 for playback on pc's.
I have used xmediarecode in the past.
I wish to do the conversion without any recoding if possible.
Is xmediarecode still the optimal software to use or are there others that might yield a better quality & faster result?
TIA

Have you tried just remux them(no video reconversion)? In xmedia recode choose Format MP4 under Video -> Mode -> Copy and Audio -> Mode -> Copy.
Or remux to MKV with mkvtoolnixgui.
But it wont work with all m2ts. Give use your m2ts video details. Use for example Mediainfo.
Or just play the m2ts with VLC Media player... -
I use THIS FREEBIE to do that with my Panasonic .m2ts files (altough they're not from that particular model).
It will transcode the audio to AAC to make it more compatible as an mp4, but it does not recode the video, so it's quite quick
It's a portable app - so no need to install - just download and open. Drag and drop. Press 'start'.... Done. -
If this is too much info, please tell me and I will delete the unneeded portions.

If I have XMedia Recode convert the audio to AAC as MKVtoMP4 does, then the .mp4 plays with its audio.
-
Further to my posts above, I should probably add that although you don't need to actually install the Mkv2Mp4 program, you will probably need to modify the default settings to create a file with an mp4 rather than an m4v output extension...
-Unzip the downloaded file
-Select the x32 or x64 folder, whichever matches your computer hardware (32 or 64 bit systems)
-Click on the .exe file in that folder
-Click 'setup' - 'video' - and select 'mp4' as your 'output format' -
Thank you.
What bitrate should I set for the AAC audio.
The AC-3 audio was a 256kbps Constant bitrate.
Should the AAC be the same as AC-3 setting? -
I usually let the audio encode run at the default settings. ....in theory, some experts say that AAC bit rates can be slightly lower than AC3 for the same quality - although any differences are marginal in practice .
For an AC3 bitrate of 256Kbps, you'll probably get around 195kbps for AAC with the default settings.
The default settings using the Nero AAC encoder (click on the audio section in the set up to change the encoder) will use a slightly higher bit rate.
As I say, in reality there's hardly any difference when encoding camcorder audio. I'd be surprised if you can hear any difference at all from the original audio, using the default settings....
And of course there's no change at all with the video itself.
