  1. Hi there,

I'm completely new to video editing / recording and don't really know much about the area, so this might be quite a newbie question.

I'm having issues with any videos I upload to YouTube taking a very noticeable quality hit, in terms of being not anywhere near as sharp etc as the source file. I need some advice on formats / conversion I think.

I've been recording full screen using Fraps and editing in Windows Movie Maker, this seems to output only in WMV. Once the video is done (saving using 'for HD display 1080p' option), the video looks great played back directly on the PC. Below is the details of the final video.

Uploading to YouTube though it seems to turn out quite horrible quality. Someone has told me it's to do with transcoding from YouTube, and pointed me to this link https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/1722171?hl=en to try and convert the video into those specs to minimize the amount of transcoding involved.

The thing is I don't really know what I should be using to convert the video into those, there aren't really any export settings in Movie Maker that seem to give any of those options. I have tried something like FreeMake Video Converter to convert to MP4, but despite it saying it keeps original quality it seems to actually make the source file worse when played locally, and worse still when uploaded to YouTube. Ideally I need to make use of any decent free software available as I don't really have the money to spend on stuff like Sony Studio / Vegas etc.

Also a final little thing which has also confused me is the game I was recording ran at 60fps and I was using Fraps set to record at 60fps, but the video shows 30fps?

    Any help would be great.

    24000kbps sounds way enough.

But post also the full details from one of your wmv files. Use mediainfo, open wmv, change to view->text and copy everything so we can see all details.

  4. What kind of video does Fraps output ? Can you post a mediainfo text of that ? No need to post screenshots, find the text in mediainfo and copy paste it.

  6. To edit and encode you could try this tutorial using virtualdub and xvid.
    http://www.wikihow.com/Compress-Fraps-Videos-with-VirtualDub
Try a small sample and see if there is an improvement. The important part here is virtualdub. Learn to use it, it will make it easier for the more knowledgeable members to help.

Another option is Avidemux, see if it can open your fraps files.

Thanks, I'll have a look and give those a try to see if it helps.
