I recently accepted the upgrade of MKVtoolnix but my shortcut on the desktop for MKVmergeGUI has stopped operating as a bad file path etc., no good shortcut.
I use VH software page and so advise on where I can properly get these things working together again. MKVtoolnix overwrites the old file.
I have limited experience with this tool and can only do a couple things in it.

Right-Click on the program exe and drag it to your desktop, then select create shortcut.
Got my retirement plans all set. Looks like I only have to work another 5 years after I die........ -
I will try what you say but I understood (without having done this recently) that the gui is a separate program. And the GUI program I can't find at VH. I'm missing something. Why does the gui not find the executables from a simple upgrade?
Begin at the beginning with the install of the new MKVToolnix. Then say what is needed. Avoid shorthand.
Sometimes I make written notes. I'll see if there's any when I did this last time. -
As far as i know the old gui ( MKVmergeGUI) is been replaced by MKVToolnixGui.
The old version is no longer available in recent builds. -
If you don't need nothing more for you're muxing, just go back to V7.90.
-
Ok thanks for that important information change.
I'll try it both ways old from my backup and the newer. -
Just a note on my error. When looking at the file list for MKVToolnix, I did not remember that mmg.exe was the name for MKVmergeGUI. This could be easily clarified. It was what the first poster was talking about.
I've decided to use the older version which I have a small guide for.
The interface with flashing error codes (x box flashing on and off in red) is annoying.
I don't say error checking is not important. This form of it is annoying: like teacher tapping her big toe until you fix it. It was happening when I was trying to get the time code in the proper syntax for a trim/edit.
A pop up box describes the syntax for the time code. It might be used instead of the inscrutable red 'x'. -
One more thing. I am back in the old version 7. No more teacher's big toe (see above) but I've still not got the syntax wrong with my little printed guide sitting in front of me. The colons and periods and commas are still off.
Under the Global tab of version 7:
I want to make a split and save both pieces at 5 min 22 secs.
There should be two pieces, one 5:22 and the remainder to the end of file at the original length of 25:23:488 (or find the end.)
Saying it again: Cut at 5:22 and save both pieces to the end. Something keeps going wrong.
And if it can save both pieces how are the files marked? filename(1) 001 and filename(1) 002 ? -
I made a screenshot of the new GUI but it works exactly the same in the old GUI IIRC:
[Attachment 35412 - Click to enlarge]
Tip: hover your mouse over the mode and timecode fields of the GUI and yellow help text bubbles should appear explaining the format and everything.
For "output.mkv" file names would be:
output-001.mkv
output-002.mkv -
Yes I've seen the bubble messages. Flashing anything is just a no-no. And at one point I looked at my folder and did get some result. Just not the result I needed.
Is there a syntax command in the old style to say make a cut at 5 min :35 sec and save the remainder to the end (of file)? I monitored the piece again and now have a more accurate time placement for the edit.
If Global > select timecode and > Limit > 2 files are specified what is the syntax in the old version (which is different-- a comma is used or something)?
00:05:35.000 gives beginning to the break using the period. What follows and simply give the complete syntax.
Previously I would say what is above and then make a separate edit from the break e.g:
00:05:35.000 > end
If it were one command, something like 00:05:35.000,00:05:35.001 would do it.
But now I'm even confusing even myself.
Explain how it should look. -
Progress.
The simple solution to all that by me up there is to just use Global > Split (open) split after time code > 2 files limit.
That gave my first and second part automatically with the files marked 001 and 002.
This should conclude the thread but there's a chancew something else will come up. This the first of six parts.
Thanks for your patience -
Like I said: the old and new GUI work the same way in that respect. Just copy what you see in my screenshot.

In the Toolnix guide , the screen shot shows everything but the time and its syntax even though it is described in the text. That's why I've asked about this more than once. Previous problem was a bit different.
Now I that know about mmg.exe etc (I don't think that's in the guide either) I'll be more self sufficient. But the new version can wait for awhile. -
I have also updated my MKVToolnix cutting guide:

sneaker: What browser are you using to upload your screen shots/file attachments? They shouldn't look like that. It should be an image preview. -
