  1. This is worth paying attention to. Up to now, I was under the impression that the only way to get a ZFS NAS was to roll your own—not an impossible task but not for the squeamish either. Well, that seems to be changing as QNAP looks to be offering a NAS with FreeBSD + ZFS. Why is this such a big deal? Well, this sentence says it all:

    While the move to QES with ZFS brings features such as inline compression, data deduplication, checksumming / bitrot protection and increased shapshot capabilities, we lose support for powerful QNAP apps such as Virtualization Station and Container Station.
    QNAP apps? Hmmph! Checksumming / bitrot protection and COW FTW!!!

    But it's too expensive for me, I might roll my own at some point. What is so great about qnap apps?
