  1. I have been ripping DVDs and editing very small sections from the movie (e.g.- a word here or there: less than second of dialogue). I then rip to MP4 using Handbrake. I am struggling with how to do this with Blu-Ray. DVDRemake makes it very easy (go to point right before segment that I want to cut out, split the scene, go to next scene and the cut to the point I want to edit out.) I would be happy to pay for a tool to do so. Any pointers as to what tool can edit dozens or hundreds of small segments out of a blu-ray movie would be appreciated. Thanks.

I don't think you will find anything simple to edit the blu-ray directly like dvdremake.

Are you planning to convert your blu-ray to mp4 also? Then could you try find a mp4 editor that can cut exactly like videoredo tvsuite, solveigmm video splitter, tmpgenc mpeg renderer. You set start and stop, delete, repeat, save as a new mp4.

  3. Thanks. I had not considered going to MP4 first and then editing. I found this website with recommended Handbrake settings for Blu-Ray encoding. Would you agree with them?

  4. If you're using pieces as small as a word, mp4 (h.264) is about the worst possible choice because of its long-GOP structure.

Transcode to an i-frame only format such as DNxHD, ProRes or Canopus HQ or even DV --as proxies if you wish-- then edit in a real NLE such as Vegas Movie Studio (cheap) or Premiere (not cheap) or aviutl (free but sui generis.) In any of them you can link back to your original sources after cutting for a high quality final output.

  5. Thanks for that info. Very helpful. Sorry for being a novice but what tool would I use to transcode (free if possible). I don't have Quicktime Pro, Avid, Vegas Movie Studio that are listed on the download page. I own Pinnacle Studio 16 and it does not have one as far as I can tell. I also own CS3/Premiere but not sure if that is too old a version for Blu-Ray. I will give aviutil a shot but still need to know how to transcode it. Also, if using aviutil which intermediate format would you recommend?

    Thanks again!

Pinnacle Studio 16's supported formats are:

    Video Files

    AVI Files (.avi)
    MPEG-1/2 Files (.mpg, .mpeg, .mod, .m1v, m2v, .mp2)
    MPEG-4 Files (.mp4)
    AVCHD/HDV/M2T Files (.m2t, .m2ts, .mts)
    TOD Files (.tod)
    WMV Files (.wmv)
    MOV Files (.mov)
    3GP Files (.3gp, .3g2, .skm)
    Digital Video File (.dv, .dvsd)
    iTunes Video File (.m4v)
    YUV Files (.yuv, .2vuy)
    ASF Files (.asf)
    Internal Video Files (.dif, .ts2)
    Matroska container files (.mkv)
    Other Files (.dvd)
    FlashVideo Files (.flv)

If you are just removing words or dialog, it may be easier to edit just the audio track. Convert audio maybe to AC3 and video to MP4 or MKV H.264 with VidCoder.

Edit just the audio in Audacity Drop the whole video file onto Audacity and the audio should appear, do your edits and then mux back with the video in VidCoder.
You can just pass through the video.

You do need to install FFmpeg 2.2.2 Binary for Windows. But that's easy and Audacity has a DL link to it in 'Edit>Preferences>Libraries'.

When you edit the audio, make sure to replace the cut audio with the same amount of silence to keep everything in sync.

Probably many other ways, but that works for me and it's all freeware and editing audio is much easier than editing highly compressed video.
